As we begin our journey through this classic hymn, ask yourself again today if you truly know the presence of the Holy Spirit. Let’s tune our hearts.

Fire

As we ponder this prayer for filling over the next few weeks open your heart to the work of the Holy Spirit. Sometimes because we are afraid of what the Spirit may do we choose no fire over false fire. We prefer powerless safety over what we perceive as the potential danger of fire from on high.

Even this first line opens the door to that risk. If you are going to pray this prayer at all it must be done earnestly. Keep that in mind as you consider each line, and whether or not you will ask God to do it in you.

Hover o’er me Holy Spirit

And divided tongues as of fire appeared to them and rested on each one of them. Acts 2:3 ESV

The Spirit came to the disciples on the Day of Pentecost. Like flames of fire He hovered over each one of them. He wants to come and hover over each of us as well, but we must position ourselves like the early disciples. Are you waiting on the Holy Spirit?

Those first disciples experienced tongues of fire resting above each of them. This will likely not be your experience, so be careful not to long for it, and miss His presence. He wants to hover over your life. Invite Him to come and hover over you.

RESONATE!
Take a few moments and ask the Spirit to hover over you. Confess you are not longing for an experience as mush as an encounter with God. Quiet yourself before Him and ask Him to begin to prepare you to be filled by removing an preconceived notions of what that make look or sound like. 

Bathed

I can not even fathom what that experience must have been like. They had been through so much since the crucifixion of Jesus: His resurrection and ascension, His command to return to Jerusalem and wait, weeks of hoping and praying, and now this. How must they have felt?

I am certain I would have been trembling as the wind rushed into that room and the flames of the Spirit hovered over each of their heads. Though our experience may be different from theirs it is no less miraculous. God chooses to bathe our hearts and minds with His very presence. Like them, we are never the same.

Jesus had instructed them that power would come upon them. Were they praying for power? He had told them they would be witnesses. Were they praying for those opportunities? Probably both and so much more. Then the Spirit bathed them in His presence. How we long for that same power and to be witnesses like them so that others may know the love of God.

Bathe my trembling heart and brow

…God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us. Romans 5:5b ESV

He wants to do more than hover over us, He wants to bathe us in His presence, cleansing and purifying us so we are prepared to serve Him. His Spirit ushers His transforming love into our hearts and changes us.

When the Spirit begins to reveal Himself to us, it is an overwhelming feeling and concept, engaging both the heart and the mind. We may find ourselves trembling in His presence as He envelopes us. Ask the Spirit to bathe your heart and brow.

Spirit, bathe my trembling heart and brow.

Take a few moments and quiet your heart and mind. Then pray this simple prayer, “Spirit, bathe my trembling heart and brow.” Remember, you are not looking for tongues of fire, but the unmistakeable presence of God.

Spirit, thank You for coming at Pentecost. You demonstrated Your willingness to be with us then, and we believe You still want to. Help us prepare for your coming by praying and waiting like those first disciples.  In Jesus’ name. Amen!

Those first disciples experienced tongues of fire resting above each of them. This will likely not be your experience, so be careful not to long for it, and miss His presence. He wants to hover over your life. Invite Him to come and hover over you.

Spirit, come and hover over me.

When the Spirit begins to reveal Himself to us, it is an overwhelming feeling and concept, engaging both the heart and the mind. We may find ourselves trembling in His presence as He envelopes us. Ask the Spirit to bathe your heart and brow.

Oh, to be filled with the fullness of God. That is what the Spirit does when He fills us. He consumes us with an awareness of the holy presence of God. He is without fault or blemish and to be filled with that perfection is life-changing. Beg for that filling today.

Spirit, fill me with Your holy presence.

It is not a demanding request, but one of desperation. It is not a command, but a gentle query. Come, and fill me now. Have you ever prayed such a prayer? “Spirit please come and fill me now.” If so, you can pray it again. If not, will you consider doing it today?

Spirit, come, o come and fill me now.

Take a few moments to talk to Jesus about what has surfaced in your heart, or just listen to what He is saying to you, then we will sing once more.

Seeing Him Clearly

When we see Jesus for who He truly is, His unmatched beauty becomes very clear. When we see ourselves clearly and then contrast that with who He is, His beauty only intensifies. He is our Savior and Lord of all.

Beautiful Saviour Lord of all the nations

The saying is trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am the foremost. 1 Timothy 1:15 ESV

Here we see the quality above all others that makes Jesus the fairest. He is never more beautiful to us than when we see Him as our Savior. But He is not only our Savior, He is the Savior of the world, of people like us, and not like us, though we are all the same in needing a Savior.

What makes Jesus beautiful to you? Is it something He’s done for you or is it simply something He is? Granted, these two things can be the same, but which one truly drives your affection? Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal to you the true beauty of Jesus Christ.

For Who He Truly Is

Jesus humbled Himself to do the will of His Father. He was the Son of God yet became one of us so that He could offer Himself as a sacrifice for our sins. One of the times this was most clearly on display was when He was baptized.

The voice of the Father came from heaven declaring Jesus was His Son. He was also fully man and lived a life that is an example to us of humble obedience to the Father. Even His baptism was an example for us to follow.

Son of God and Son of Man

Who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. Philippians 2:6-7 ESV 

Here are the credentials that allow Him to serve as our Savior. He is fully God, and so has untold power. He is fully man, able to identify with our every weakness. He brings that power and weakness together by becoming our Savior. There is no one more fair.

Do you believe both of these things are true of Jesus? He is the Son of God and He is the Son of Man. Both of these things are essential for Him to have become our savior. You must believe both are true. If you do not, then you did not know Jesus as scripture reveals Him.

RESONATE
Take a few moments and think about Jesus Divinity and humanity. Do you find either hard to believe? Pray this simple prayer, “Jesus, I believe You are Son of God and Son of Man.“  

Jesus, thank You for being fully God and fully man. Thank you for being the Savior and Lord of the Nations. There is no one like You. In Jesus’ name.

Holy Spirit, reveal to me the true beauty of Jesus Christ

Do you believe both of these things are true of Jesus? He is the Son of God and He is the Son of Man. Both of these things are essential for Him to have become our savior. You must believe both are true. If you do not, then you did not know Jesus as scripture reveals Him.

Jesus, I believe You are Son of God and Son of Man.

Are you driven to offer praise to Jesus? The glory that is due His name and no other? Do you sing His praise? Do you live for His glory? Do you pray and give to see His kingdom come on earth as it is in heaven? Do you long to stand in His presence and praise Him?

Spirit, consume my life with a passion to praise Jesus.

Praising Jesus forever sounds great. But remember, forever includes today, right now. Are you waiting to praise Jesus? Though we long to be in His presence praising Him forever, forever starts right now. Do not wait for forever to begin. Start praising Jesus today.

Jesus, help me praise you today and every day.

Looking Up

God has graciously given us so many examples and expressions of Jesus’ fairness. All of them fall short of Him, but each in it’s own way point us to Him just the same. This week we are looking up to further develop our perspective of how fair Jesus is.

Look up. Well, go outside and look up. No matter what source of light you can spy in the expanse above reflect on the fact that it is beacon pointing you to a still fairer Source. First, we consider sun and moon.

Fair is the sunshine fairer still the moonlight

…God made the two great lights—the greater light to rule the day and the lesser light to rule the night— Genesis 1:16 ESV

God set the sun and the moon in place to rule the day and the night. They are marvelous to behold, very different in nature, and serve as incredible blessings to us who live on the earth. Fair is also very light in color or pigmentation, and they are variations of that as well.

The bright warmth of the sun and the gentle coolness of the moon are stark contrasts. The moon is paler, thus its distinction as “fairer”. One is a reflection of the other, having no light of its own. What a beautiful picture of our relationship to Jesus. We simply reflect His light.

RESONATE! 
Take a few moments and think about the fairness of the two great heavenly orbs. Better yet, actually go outside and marvel at their beauty. Now thank God for being the true Source of all that brightness. Make this your simple prayer “Jesus, thank You for being our Source of fairness.” 

Even Into the Darkness

There is light even in the dark. Have you ever gotten away from the ambient light of the city on a night when the moon was waning to nothing? The stars really put on a  show in that setting. If you have never experienced that, make a point of it. You will be glad you did.

We learn a lesson in those moments that even in the darkness God still gives us light. The twinkling host of heaven from millions of miles away give a hint of the fairness of the One who made them. May we endeavor to do at least the same when we find ourselves in deep darkness.

And all the twinkling starry host

…and the stars. And God set them in the expanse of the heavens to give light on the earth, to rule over the day and over the night, and to separate the light from the darkness. And God saw that it was good. Genesis 1:14-18 ESV

The stars are also fair. They are a part of the light that God has put in the sky to separate the light from the darkness. How kind of our Lord to give us a measure of light even in the dark.

From reflection to refraction, stars appear to twinkle because of the redirection of the light waves as it enters our atmosphere. The waves of light are affected by wind and different temperatures and densities. Atmospheric circumstances affect our refraction as well.

RESONATE
Take a few moments and think about twinkling. Do you twinkle? I hope so. Pray this simple prayer, “Father, help me refract the fairness of Jesus.“  

Jesus, thank You for Your fairness reflected and refracted in the heavens above and beyond this earthly plane. Their light penetrates our atmosphere and remind us that so does Yours. Help us become more aware of it every day. In Jesus’ name.

In scripture, people are generally terrified of angels partly because they likely have a radiance that is other-worldly. How much more might that be the case of the One who is the Source even of their fairness? All the angels combined do not shine as pure as the King of Heaven.

Jesus, thank You for shining brighter than the angels.

Plains and Forests

I grew up in the mountains. There beauty is easy for me to see. Sometimes maybe to easy, in that I take it for ranted.

I can hardly recall a trip to North Dakota as a child, but had seen others topographies and could appreciate the different beauty they possessed. I will never forget traveling across the upper plains one summer, particularly when we came over one rise and could see what seemed like endless miles of wheat. The wind looked like the fingers of God gently raking across the fields. It was a beauty I had never seen before that moment.

There are many different scenes which reveal the beauty of our God. Oh, to have eyes to see the fingerprints of God in each. Can you?

Fair are the meadows fairer still the woodlands

“For you shall go out in joy and be led forth in peace; the mountains and the hills before you shall break forth into singing, and all the trees of the field shall clap their hands.” Isaiah 55:12 ESV

God reveals His glory in creation. He reveals His glory in Jesus. Have you taken a walk through a meadow or a woodland lately? The beauty can be overwhelming, but be certain to let it lead you to praise the One who made it. We do not worship the creation, but the Creator.

Beautiful wide open spaces. Beautiful closed in spaces. Beautiful grasslands and fields of wheat. Beautiful forests and trees. Beauty all around for the eye and the ear, for the nose and the hand. Beauty to be taken in, lived in, moved in. Beauty. So…much…beauty.

RESONATE!
Take a few moments and think about the swath of nature that most evokes your praise. Ask God to help you see His beauty in that and every expression. Make this your simple prayer “Lord, help me know the beauty.” 

Spring

It is not the only season that stirs our praise, but to see the bursting forth of life after a long winter, spring has its own beauty. The buds begin to show on the tress. Flowers begin to bloom. As everything greens up, the reemergence of life seems unmistakable.

The barrenness of winter is slowing covered by a blanket of new life. Sure there are some weeds mixed among all the beauty, but still the beauty is there. What is it about spring that most captivates you?

Robed in the blooming garb of spring

The wilderness and the dry land shall be glad; the desert shall rejoice and blossom like the crocus; it shall blossom abundantly and rejoice with joy and singing. Isaiah 35:1-2a ESV

A desert rejoicing and blossoming like a crocus. That sounds like such a beautiful, remarkable thing. The stark and barren land replaced with joy and a garment of flowers.That kind of transformation is something worth noticing. Meadows and woodlands alike revealing God.

All that beauty clothed like a garment. Wrapped in layers of even more beauty. Beauty for a season. Fleeting beauty. Here today, gone tomorrow, over a canvas that never changes. Temporal and lasting, woven together in a fabric of created beauty. Dressed up. Beautiful.

RESONATE
Take a few moments and think spring. The promise life bursting forth everywhere. Pray this simple prayer, “Father, thank You for the beauty of Your creation.“  

Jesus, thank You creating. A we begin o see everything as an expression of Your beauty, we are moved to praise again and again. Show us Your glory. In Jesus’ name.

Jesus, thank You for being so fair and pure.

His beauty is not just to be observed. It instructs. It reminds us there is wholeness and wholesomeness. It shows us that even when things are broken they can be beautiful again. Seasons change and so do our lives. There is hope in the beauty of Jesus. 

Jesus, Your beauty points to what can be.

Jesus

This text originally written in German with no record of authorship is such an incredible expression of praise. It seems fitting the author would not even want to list their name anywhere near the One that is above every other name. The focus is simply on Jesus, and what a wonderful image is created with these words.

There are several definitions of fair. This opening line seems to explore one in particular: the fact that He, and His rule, are free of self-interest, prejudice or favoritism. He is not only fair, but the fairest. We will explore how His fairness is revealed through creation in subsequent stanzas, but here the focus seems to be on this aspect primarily.

Fairest Lord Jesus Ruler of all nature

He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. Hebrews 1:3 ESV

This is who He is, the lovely Lord Jesus. This is His authority, the Ruler of all nature. Not only earth, but the entire universe. Authority over all. Beauty above all. He has no equals in any way. Unmatched and unparalleled in dominion and majesty. Worship Him!

There is no one like Jesus across all time and space, nor will there ever be. He is the fairest, where that word is used to describe something that is such to the utmost. This is a very unusual usage so immediately speaks of a different idea than is conjured by most.

RESONATE!
Take a few moments and think about the fact that the Ruler of all nature is Jesus, fairest Lord that ever has been. Spend some time thanking Him for revealing His beauty to You. Make this your simple prayer “Jesus, there is none so fair as You.” 

The Son

Though He spoke creation into being and reveals His glory through it, He also became a part of it. He has been fully God eternally. He became fully man at just the right time.

O Thou of God and man the Son

But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son, born of woman, Galatians 4:4a ESV

He is both of God and man. The only begotten Son of the Father, and also born of woman. Jesus, the uncreated One humbled Himself to be born like us so He became familiar with our weaknesses without ever giving up a bit of His strength.

Fully God and fully man. This one truth alone sets Jesus apart from any rivals, of which He has none. There is a mystery in the fullness of His divinity and humanity that we can only begin to fathom. Both God and man, and always the Son. That is our Savior.

RESONATE
Take a few moments and think about this mystery. We simply can not understand how it can be, yet we believe it and know it is true. Pray this simple prayer, “Jesus, help me marvel at the mystery.“  

Jesus, thank You revealing Your glory to us. Thank You for becoming one of us, though You are different from us. Cause my soul to swell with praise for who You are.  In Jesus’ name.

Welcome to Tuesday Tunings at Resonant 7, where we reflect on the reality of God and resolve to let it resound in our lives, repeatedly. Let’s tune our hearts.

Fairest Lord Jesus Ruler of all nature
O Thou of God and man the Son
Thee will I cherish Thee will I honor
Thou my soul’s glory joy and crown

He is worthy of glory, praise, adoration, honor etc. Still, I must make the choice to give Him what he deserves and commit to doing so with my entire life. It is not enough to acknowledge He is worthy. I must also find ways to express that in my daily living and choices.

Jesus, I commit to honor You.

This is why I honor Him. He is the glory, joy and crown of my soul. He is worthy of glory. He is my soul’s joy. He is the crown of my soul. Being His is what endows my soul with inestimable value. I am created in the image of God, and being recreated in the image of His Son.

Jesus, thank You for infusing my soul with value.

Take a few moments to talk to Jesus about what has surfaced in your heart, or just listen to what He is saying to you, then we will sing the refrain..
