We continue our journey through this classic hymn sung across oceans and denominations for 150 years. Our prayer is the same as all the saints who have sung it before, “Revive us again”. Let’s tune our hearts.
Restarting Your Rhythm
Generally speaking, dead people do not ask to be revived. But that is exactly what is happening in this hymn. Well, kind of.
You see, we were dead but when we became God’s children through faith in Jesus Christ, we are…born again. We who were dead become spiritually alive again.
So when we are asking to be revived again, we are not asking to be brought to life again because that miraculous transaction has already occurred. Instead, we are asking for our spiritual rhythm to be restarted.
Think of it as spiritual defibrillation. A defibrillator produces an electrical impulse used to restart the heart after cardiac arrest. Doctors use this machine to revive people’s hearts.
Our spiritual hearts too easily grow cold and hard. We lose our ability to move with God, and then wonder why He seems distant. This simple prayer of revival is one we must learn to pray routinely for this very reason. When was the last time you asked Him to revive you?
Revive us again;
Will you not revive us again, that your people may rejoice in you? Psalm 85:6 ESV
What greater cause is there for rejoicing and giving glory to God than when He revives us again? We can no more revive our lifeless faith than our lifeless bodies. We are trusting God to resurrect us beyond the grave, and we can also trust Him to restore and reinvigorate our faith as well.
RESONATE!
When was the last time you were honest enough with God to ask to be revived? It requires you to admit that your spiritual rhythm has stopped, gone into spiritual cardiac arrest. He knows it. You know it. Why hesitate. Ask Him to revive you again today so you may rejoice anew in Him. What are you waiting for? He already has the paddles in His gracious hands. Just ask, “Father, please revive me again today.” Then wait for it.
Filling Your Heart With Love
And just how does He do that work of reviving our hearts? Well, it is not through an electric impulse. No, it is through something far more transforming, though no less shocking.
Fill each heart with Thy love;
Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love. 1 John 4:8 ESV
Those are strong words but they are fair. God is love and when we know Him through His life in us, we will love. Not we might love, we will.
Love is what marks us as the children of God. If we truly know God, we take a posture of love toward others, and not only those who have been good to us. This is not easy, but when we trust God to fill us with that kind of transforming love it is certainly possible.
God revives our hearts, bringing them back into rhythm with Him, by filling them anew with His love.
Loving God and loving others is the very core of what we are supposed to do as followers of Christ, but sometimes we fail to operate out of this default setting. Why? Because we choose to operate in our own strength as opposed to His. When we do, our lives are out of rhythm with God and His purposes because they are not filled with love.
RESONATE!
For your good and the glory of God, echo that prayer for Jesus to fill you with His transforming love. Simply pray, “Jesus, fill my heart with Your love”, then wait and let that occur. Then the next time you are tempted to respond in your own strength pray it again. If you do, Jesus will fill you with His love enabling you to respond in rhythm with Him and His ways. Don’t wait! Do it right now.
Jesus, fill my heart with Your love and revive me again that I may rejoice in You and lead others to do the same. I confess I have too often operated in my own strength and have failed to love as You do. Revive me again so I can bring You glory. In Jesus’ name. Amen!

Welcome to Tuesday Tunings at Resonant 7, where we reflect on the reality of God and resolve to let it resound in our lives, repeatedly. Let’s tune our hearts.
Revive us again;
Fill each heart with Thy love;
May each soul be rekindled
With fire from above.
Refrain:
Hallelujah! Thine the glory.
Hallelujah! Amen.
Hallelujah! Thine the glory.
Revive us again.
Our hearts too easily grow cold and hard. We lose our ability to move with God, and then wonder why He seems distant. This simple prayer of revival is one we must learn to pray routinely for this very reason. When was the last time you asked Him to revive you?
Father, please revive me again today.
Loving God and loving others is the very core of what we are supposed to do as followers of Christ, but it is not always apparent to others that our hearts are filled with love. For your good and the glory of God, echo that prayer for Jesus to fill you with His transforming love.
Jesus, fill my heart with Your love.
Something that was kindled but lost it’s flame must be rekindled so that flame may burn hot enough to catch the surrounding material on fire. Does your soul burn with a passion to give glory to God as it likely did at first? Ask the Spirit to rekindle your soul with a consuming love.
Spirit, rekindle my soul with all-consuming love.
It is not an earthly kindling we seek, but a heavenly one. The flame that will truly spark the embers of our souls is one that comes from on high. His consuming love is the fire that will ignite an unquenchable desire for His glory. Ask God to give you that love.
God, send Your fire down upon me.
Take a few moments to talk to Jesus about what has surfaced in your heart, or just listen to what He is saying to you, then we will sing once more.
Sing
Take the awareness of God’s presence cultivated in these last few minutes into the next ones and beyond. Until next time, Be Resonant.
