As we begin our journey through this beloved hymn come with fresh ears. Sometimes a song can be so familiar some of the meaning can get lost. Try to reclaim a bit of this one as we look deeply at these words. Let’s tune our hearts.
A Gavel
When we think about coming before God many different images come to mind. Jesus welcoming us with open arms. The sheep and the goats from Matthew 24. And certainly the Great White Throne from Revelation. We must all give an account for how we lived our lives.
Do you swear to tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth, so help you God? Of course you do. You will not have a choice because everything you have ever done will be recounted, in painful detail.
The Judge strikes His gavel and ask how you will plead. In light of all the testimony against you there will be only one response. So what will you say?
Just as I am without one plea
Surely there is not a righteous man on earth who does good and never sins. Ecclesiastes 7:20 ESV
There is nothing to be said. No argument to make. No merit to declare. As we come before God it is imperative that we acknowledge the truth of who we are, sinners. We must confess it and throw ourselves on His mercy. That humility prepares us to own our position.
This is how we come before God. No opportunity to get our act together for the effort would be futile. There is no plea we could offer, no argument to make that would change our standing or position before Him. We come as we are, wretched, vile, broken sinners.
RESONATE!
Take a few moments and consider God’s justice in light of your sin. We truly have nothing to say. Make this your simple prayer today “Father, I have no argument to make.”
A Cup
Then, just as you are prepared to offer your plea of “Guilty” Jesus steps up and covers you with His blood. You are made to appear as if you were innocent, having never sinned, even though you had. How? Jesus makes the plea on your behalf and bases it solely on His finished work on the cross where He shed His blood for you, and the whole world.
He drank a cup of bitter suffering so that He could fill another cup with the blood of redemption.
But that Thy Blood was shed for me
In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace…Ephesians 1:7 ESV
We were separated from God because of our sin, but His grace brought us back to Him. He forgave us all our trespasses. He redeemed us with His blood shed for us. It is the only plea that makes a difference in our position and grants us access once again to God.
The only thing that can make a difference for me was offered freely. The blood of Jesus changes my standing before God because it changes how He sees me. Jesus washes me with that cleansing flow and imparts His righteousness to me. Thanks be to God.
RESONATE!
Take a few moments and consider that cup. We can not imagine what it cost Jesus to fill it up. Pray a simple prayer like this one, “Jesus, thank You for shedding Your blood for me.” Then place your faith in it alone.
God, in light of my guilt, I make no plea other than the blood of Jesus. Thank You for making that available for me and giving me the faith to believe. In Jesus’ name. Amen!

Welcome to Tuesday Tunings at Resonant 7, where we reflect on the reality of God and resolve to let it resound in our lives, repeatedly. Let’s tune our hearts.
Just as I am without one plea
But that Thy Blood was shed for me
And that Thou bidd’st me come to Thee
O Lamb of God I come I come
This is how we come before God. No opportunity to get our act together for the effort would be futile. There is no plea we could offer, no argument to make that would change our standing or position before Him. We come as we are, wretched, vile, broken sinners.
Father, I have no argument to make.
The only thing that can make a difference for me was offered freely. The blood of Jesus changes my standing before God because it changes how He sees me. Jesus washes me with that cleansing flow and imparts His righteousness to me. Thanks be to God.
Jesus, thank You for shedding Your blood for me.
And as if cleansing me from all my sin was not enough, He then invited me to draw near. I am able to come because He has cleansed me, otherwise I would not dare to even consider approaching a holy God. Because He calls me I will come as the Spirit enables me.
Spirit, help me to approach boldly.
The Lamb of God takes away the sins of the world, and He takes away my sin. That new standing before God allows me to make my approach, to come for God on the basis of what the Lamb of God has done for me. I come just as I am, and He changes me entirely. Hallelujah!
Lord, I come.
Take a few moments to talk to Jesus about what has surfaced in your heart, or just listen to what He is saying to you, then we will sing once more.
Sing
Take the awareness of God’s presence cultivated in these last few minutes into the next ones and beyond. Until next time, Be Resonant.
