We continue our journey through this classic hymn sung across oceans and denominations for 150 years. Our prayer is the same as all the saints who have sung it before, “Revive us again”. Let’s think about this.
The Work of the Spirit
Who hath shown us our Savior,
For God, who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. 2 Corinthians 4:6 ESV
The Holy Spirit is the One who reveals Jesus Christ to us. Without that work we would not be able to find peace with God, let alone praise Him for the same. Too often we take that incredible work for granted. Imagine for a minute a world without the influence of the Holy Spirit.
Sin would still have occurred. God would still have planned redemption. Jesus would Still have become incarnate, lived a perfect life and died on the cross to reconcile us to the Father by becoming sin for us. We might even be able to comprehend the historicity of said facts, particularly the work of Christ, but we would have no way to grasp the spiritual implications. There would be a path back to God, but we would not be able to find it.
The light of Jesus Christ shines into the darkness of our souls and our world, and it is the Holy Spirit to makes that light known to us. He pushed the darkness back by revealing our Savior. He continues to do that every day.
Thank Him for showing your your Savior. Thank Him for the effect that has had on the darkness within and without. Thanking Him is a beginning point, but we need to do so much more to welcome the ongoing work of the Spirit in our lives.
RESONATE!
Do you recall when the Spirit first revealed Jesus Christ to you? Can you recall when He last did? He lives within us to continually do this work so we can continually shine the light of Christ in a dark world. Walk with Him today with this prayer on your lips, “Spirit, please show me my Savior again, and shine His light through me.”
Darkness Scatters
Think about it. You are in a dark room. No light. Pitch black. You light a candle. What happens immediately?
Does the darkness start fighting with the light? Is there a struggle between them? Are you left wondering who will vanquish the other?
Of course not.
When light enters any situation, darkness scatters. It has no choice. It has to flee.
The physical here is a picture of the spiritual. It might be said in some measure this is even more true in the spiritual, but that is a little hard for us to fathom, especially because we often struggle to push back the darkness in our souls. But therein lies the problem. We can not push the darkness back sometimes, try as we might.
But the Holy Spirit scatters the darkness. He does so by revealing Jesus Christ. His light eviscerates the darkness, taking in apart in an instant.
And scattered our night.
The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness, on them has light shined. Isaiah 9:2 ESV
How we praise Him for the dawning of the light!
What a beautiful image of our night scattering in response to the coming of the light of Christ! It pushes back our darkness and the darkness around us. Ask the Holy Spirit to do His work of pushing back the darkness in your life today simply by allowing the light of Christ to shine. Welcome Him again today to do that work, but realize it may be a little painful if you have grown accustomed to the darkness.
Ah, see there is our issue. We sometime choose to embrace the darkness rather than the light. The Spirit can help with that if we will allow Him.
Jesus, please come and kindly scatter the darkness in my heart.

Is there any darkness with which you are struggling. Often I will ask you to name it, but today I simply want you to welcome the work of the Holy Spirit to reveal the light of Christ. Let the light of His presence push back the darkness today. He is good. He will do it.
Spirit, thank You for doing the incredible, life-altering work of revealing my Savior to me. I would be consumed by darkness if it were not for Your work. Bring the light of Jesus into my life again today that it may have the effect of pushing back my darkness. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Welcome to Thursday Thoughts at Resonant 7, where we reflect on the reality of God and resolve to let it resound in our lives, repeatedly. Let’s think about this.
We praise Thee, O God!
But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. 1 Peter 2:9 ESV
Our worship is a response to the work of God in our lives. He has made us His people by calling us from darkness and into His marvelous light! Why? So we may proclaim His excellencies. So will you do it? Ask the Holy Spirit for help praising Him today.
For Thy Spirit of light
And I will lead the blind in a way that they do not know, in paths that they have not known I will guide them. I will turn the darkness before them into light, the rough places into level ground. These are the things I do, and I do not forsake them. Isaiah 42:16 ESV
The Holy Spirit illuminines our darkness. We were stumbling in the dark and did not even know it. Thank the Spirit for the light He brings and the direction He provides.
