‘Tis mystery all th’Immortal dies
Who can explore His strange design
In vain the firstborn seraph tries
To sound the depths of love divine
‘Tis mercy all let earth adore
Let angel minds inquire no more
And Can It Be, That I Should Gain? 1738

As we continue our journey through this hymn which encourages us to be amazed at God’s love for us prepare to respond and give Him praise. Let’s tune our hearts.
Strange Design
How exactly does this work? Why would God come up with this as His plan for redemption? Can One who is Immortal even die? Did Jesus die?
Yes He did. And that is precisely what makes the Divine Design so strange. The Immortal died for mortals.
‘Tis mystery all th’Immortal dies
Who can explore His strange design
But we impart a secret and hidden wisdom of God, which God decreed before the ages for our glory. None of the rulers of this age understood this, for if they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory. 1 Corinthians 2:7-8 ESV
There can be no mistaking the design of our redemption is strange. The Scripture makes it equally clear it was God’s design to crucify His Son for our sins. It was true eternally, but we must embrace it today.
The strange design of the mystery of redemption is one that is truly impossible to fathom. The Immortal dying for mere mortals. Though we may not come to understand it still we long to explore it, to come to some sense of understanding of His amazing love for us.
RESONATE!
Take a few moments and consider this strange design. God died for us. Make this your simple prayer “Jesus, help me explore this mystery.”
Vain Attempts
It is hard to imagine angels failing at anything, let alone this most important of responsibilities. From the foundation of the earth they have been declaring His praise. His love is the primary message they carry.
Yet not even they can fully grasp the depth of His love or communicate it.
In vain the firstborn seraph tries
To sound the depths of love divine
When the morning stars sang together and all the sons of God shouted for joy? Job 38:7 ESV
Since the foundations of the earth were laid, the angels have been singing the praises of God. Still not even they could find an adequate expression to capture the love of God on display through His sacrifice. Will you join their song today?
Mortals are not the only ones who wrestle with God’s great plan of redemption. So to do His heavenly messengers, though even their glorious sounds are vain attempts to declare the depths of His love. How can we make it known if they can not? Still we try.
RESONATE
Take a few moments and consider the vain attempts of angels to praise God. Consider how much lower our attempts must be, yet still theirs informs ours. Pray a simple prayer like this one, “Lord, thank You for the praise of angels.”
Jesus, thank You for dying for me. I know I can never completely communicate it still I will try. May I draw inspiration from the angels’ song. In Jesus’ name.

‘Tis mystery all th’Immortal dies

‘Tis mercy all let earth adore
Let angel minds inquire no more
The strange design of the mystery of redemption is one that is truly impossible to fathom. The Immortal dying for mere mortals. Though we may not come to understand it still we long to explore it, to come to some sense of understanding of His amazing love for us.
Jesus, help me explore this mystery.
Mortals are not the only ones who wrestle with God’s great plan of redemption. So to do His heavenly messengers, though even their glorious sounds are vain attempts to declare the depths of His love. How can we make it known if they can not? Still we try.
Lord, thank You for the praise of angels.
Even though the angels can not fully proclaim His love, all the earth is implored to adore. Though we can never adequately convey it still we must make our feeble attempts because His mercy demands it. Are you trying to find your place in the adoration? Do it today.
Spirit, help me adore.
While we are instructed to adore the angels are told to inquire no more. How interesting. Mortals who are filled with questions are encouraged to praise while angels who are filled with praise are instructed to cease their questions. Paradoxes abound, but such is our faith.
Jesus, help us walk in faith.
Take a few moments to talk to Jesus about what has surfaced in your heart, or just listen to what He is saying to you, then we will sing once more.
‘Tis mercy all let earth adore
Let angel minds inquire no more
Take the awareness of God’s presence cultivated in these last few minutes into the next ones and beyond. Until next time, Be Resonant.
