As we continue our journey through this hymn of commitment and our approach to Easter make time to ponder this text and all it communicates. Let’s tune our hearts.
Gloom
We all face difficult circumstances. Something does not turn out like we had planned. Someone lets us down. Somehow certainty turns into confusion.
But what can be compare with the loss of hope tied up in the death of the one who carried it? That is what those first disciples faced. They believed Jesus was the Messiah. It is hard for us to imagine what it must have felt like to watch Him be crucified and die. Yet that is exactly what they experienced.
Are you willing to retrace their steps and try to enter into that pain? What must that have felt like to them? What was Mary thinking as she returned to the tomb?
Let me like Mary through the gloom
…very early on the first day of the week, when the sun had risen, they went to the tomb. Mark 16:2 ESV
She had watched them place His body in the tomb days before. Now she was returning in the early morning to the same tomb, with tears in her eyes and sadness in her heart. How can we follow her there? How can we enter into that sadness so as to feel that desperation?
What gloom clouds your approach to Jesus? Maybe you do not think He is dead, but you still wonder why He is not acting? Why is He not changing my circumstance? Is there something that impairs your ability to see what Jesus has already done? He has conquered the grave.
RESONATE!
Take a few moments and think about Mary’s approach to the tomb. What lessons can we learn from her about walking through the gloom in our own lives? Make this your simple prayer “Jesus, help me see You through the gloom.”
Gifts
Not only was she walking through the gloom, but she was bringing a gift. She was not complaining about the gloom. She was walking through it on her way to Jesus’ tomb to offer Him a gift.
Wow!
When I face much less gloom my inclination is to get confused as to why Jesus would allow it. I am more likely to bring a gripe than a gift. At least at first. Instead, confused and bewildered Mary chose to worship still.
Making such a choice it not easy, but it is always the better choice. It changes your perspective. Instead of looking down at the broken pieces of a shattered dream lying at your feet, you can look up into the healing gaze of your Savior. Will you allow Mary’s response to inform yours today?
Come with a gift to Thee
When the Sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of James and Salome bought spices, so that they might go and anoint him. Mark 16:1 ESV
As you approach, do you have a gift? Mary brought something that she thought Jesus needed. She brought spices to anoint Him for burial. As you come to worship, what gift will you bring? What do you think Jesus “needs” from you? Will you anoint Him with praise?
Even though the gloom is present, I will still come with a gift for Jesus. Mary’s gloom was real. She had watched Him die, but her faith in Him never waivered. Has some gloom kept you from bringing your gift? Bring it through the darkness today. He is worthy.
RESONATE
Take a few moments and consider what gift you will bring. Maybe it will be hard to do it. Maybe you do not feel like it. Make the choice to worship anyway. Pray a simple prayer like this one, “Jesus, I will bring my gift to You.“
Jesus, thank You for teaching me how to respond to gloom with a gift, rather than a gripe. Show me the wonder of Mary’s approach and show me how to walk in it this Easter season, so I can be prepared for the next hard time. In Jesus’ name.

Let me like Mary through the gloom
Come with a gift to Thee
Show to me now the empty tomb
Lead me to Calvary
What gloom clouds your approach to Jesus? Maybe you do not think He is dead, but you still wonder why He is not acting? Why is He not changing my circumstance? Is there something that impairs your ability to see what Jesus has already done? He has conquered the grave.
Jesus, help me see You through the gloom.
Even though the gloom is present, I will still come with a gift for Jesus. Mary’s gloom was real. She had watched Him die, but her faith in Him never wavered. Has some gloom kept you from bringing your gift? Bring it through the darkness today. He is worthy.
Jesus, I will bring my gift to You.
She came through the partial darkness of that early morning to find an empty tomb. When you fight through your depression or despondency you may be as surprised as she was that Jesus was not where you thought He would be. Yet He was exactly where He said He would be.
Jesus, show me where You are.
If you are going to find where Jesus has gone, you will need to follow Him through where He went. Jesus denied Himself, and died to Himself, in order to follow God’s will. Calvary requires you to do the same. Deny yourself. Die to yourself. Let Jesus lead You to Calvary.
Jesus, lead me to Calvary.
Take a few moments to talk to Jesus about what has surfaced in your heart, or just listen to what He is saying to you, then we will sing once more.
Lest I forget Gethsemane
Lest I forget Thine agony
Lest I forget Thy love for me
Lead me to Calvary
Take the awareness of God’s presence cultivated in these last few minutes into the next ones and beyond. Until next time, Be Resonant.
