This is how the story ends

Welcome to Wednesday Wanderings with Dr. Sherri–a time we set aside to wander in the Presence of Jesus and ponder His truths. When you are ready, prepare your mind, body, and soul to have a transformational encounter with Jesus.

PREPARATION: In our last Wandering with Dr. Sherri, we examined  Caught up in the rapture of love. This week we will examine How the Story ends.  When you are ready, you may begin the dialogue with Jesus and state: “Jesus, I invite you to help me to leisurely wander into your Presence. Prepare my heart to receive, and illuminate my spiritual senses to encounter you.”

 PROMISE: Romans 8:28 Amplified Bible

28 And we know [with great confidence] that God [who is deeply concerned about us] causes all things to work together [as a plan] for good for those who love God, to those who are called according to His plan and purpose.

Because God is the author and finisher of our narrative, we have the blessed assurance of how the story ends.

Fanny Crosby’s story sang of trust in God. Even though she could not see the sparrow, she was certain that God watched over it. Even though she could not see the wandering sheep, she was certain that God would guide it back to safety. Even though she could not see with her physical eyes, her spiritual eyes could see beyond her circumstance and knew with certainty that God never stops working for our story to have a GOOD ending.

PARABLE:  

In the answer to our story, all of the above is true.

A. God, our Healer heals every concern of the mind, body, and soul for the Miracle Worker is working for our GOOD

B. Jesus, our Wonderful Counselor gives us knowledge, wisdom, and understanding for every circumstance for the Way Maker is working for our GOOD

C. Holy Spirit, our Comforter, and Guide will be our Light in the Darkness for He is leading us to the truth that ALL things are working for our GOOD

D. All of the Above

Time after time, story after story, God’s promises ARE TRUE and He will always be faithful to make things work for your GOOD. The ending is the same every time. The story ends for your good, well, planned, and in a way that points to His love for you. This is the story of the believer. Even when darkness tries to overshadow the light, it must fail. This is how the story ends. Even when grief chases you from sun up to sundown, it will grow weary from being chased by God’s peace. This is how the story ends. Even when loneliness whispers in the midnight hour, it will be silenced by the Presence of God. This is how the story ends. Even in the transitional time between hope and despair, healing will transpire. This is how the story ends. 

Jesus is the narrator of our story. His death, burial, and resurrection confirmed that all things are working for our good. This is our story. 

So… when you find yourself waiting, like Crosby, invite your spiritual eyes to see the ending that shows His faithful, powerful, and gracious, glory. Bring your thoughts back to this reality and let your life tell the story. Even during frustrations, pain, and draining times, lean into the dominion of God and tell the story of patience, perseverance, peace, and the promise that it IS working for your good. Cry if you must then tell the story. Stomp if you must, then tell the story. Lament if you must, then tell the story. Skip to the end of the chapter, read the ending first. Offer a song of praise that the only option for your story ending is GOOD.

What is your story? What is your song? 

Soul care training exercise:  Take a moment and turn your attention to seeking the loving Presence of God. Ponder the question What is my story? Since you already know the ending, how will you tell the story? 

  • Reflect and let the Holy Spirit reveal to you what God wants to say to you about your story.
    • Notice without judgment and with a curious awareness of what comes to your mind. Invite God into your sanctified imagination. Ask Him to bring to your attention what He wants you to know about your story.
  • Next scan your mind and notice what the Holy Spirit is sharing that you need to know, hear, or do to share your story. Expand your thoughts, it may be something you never heard told this way before.
  • Finally, Focus on your breath. As you breathe in remember that the Holy Spirt, the Breath of Life, is breathing within you the fresh, pure, perfect love of God.

PRAYER: Jesus, you are the narrator of my story that ends with ALL things working for my good. Help me to trust the ending even when I can’t see it. Help me to share the GOOD ending with others. 

PRAISE: Now that you have emptied your mind of the clutter and wandered with Jesus, take a closing moment to praise God for a good ending. Then take the mindfulness of God’s ending with you in these last few minutes of wandering into the next ones and beyond.

As we begin our journey through this well-beloved hymn rest in the assurance being in Christ provides to you. This is our story and song, praising Jesus all the day long. Let’s tune our hearts.

What’s Your Story?

Normally you ask someone this question when you are trying to get to know them. Sometimes you might ask it when you are trying to understand a particular response to a situation. But here I want you to think about your own answer to the question in terms of what it reveals is important to you.

We tend to spend our time and energy on things we value. Antique cars. Reading. Meal planning.

The things that we spend our time and energy doing become key components to the story of our lives. As those things change with different seasons we live the different chapters of our lives, but some things remain constant. What are the constants in your life?

For a Christian, Jesus should be one of those constants. Actually, He should be the one that towers over all the others. Is that true of your life?

This is my story this is my song

And this is the testimony, that God gave us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. 1 John 5:11 ESV

Before we find the assurance of eternal life in Jesus, we are each living a very different story. When we find rest in what He has accomplished for us our story changes dramatically as we begin to testify or tell the world the story of Jesus with our lives.

What’s your story? Our stories are so important. They let others now what has shaped us and give insight into what is important to us. If someone were to research your life would they discover Jesus as an integral part of it? Determine now to make it so from this day forth.

RESONATE!
Take a few moments and ask God to reveal to you what is important to you. Is Jesus the main character in your story, or does He play a lessor role? Make this your simple prayer today “God, make my story all about Jesus.” Then trust Jesus to help you live it.

How will you praise?

Praising my Savior all the day long

He is worthy of all praise. Will you commit to offering it to Him? If so, how will you do that?

You can give Him praise when you tell your story. When someone asks how your day is going you can give Him praise. When someone asks what you are doing you can point back to Him. When someone asks “What is your story?” you can point them to Jesus.

Praising my Savior all the day long

Praise the Lord! For it is good to sing praises to our God; for it is pleasant, and a song of praise is fitting. Psalm 147:1 ESV

One of the ways we testify is by giving praise to God. Sometimes we speak that praise and other times we sing it, but most importantly it becomes our way of life. Is praising your Savior something you do regularly, or occasionally? Commit to doing it more every day.

When you stop and think about what Jesus has done the most appropriate response is to give Him praise for His saving work. If He is your Savior, if you are trusting only in His finished work on the cross to make you right with Father God, then praising Him should come very easy.

RESONATE!
Take a few moments and consider how you will praise Jesus today. If you share any of your story, make certain He is a part of it. Pray a simple prayer like this one, “Jesus, help me praise You for Your saving work.” Then trust the Spirit to help you practice that every day.

Jesus, thank You for writing the story of my life. Help me to tell others about You every time I tell any part of it. You are the best part of my story. In Jesus’ name. Amen!

God, make my story all about Jesus.

When you stop and think about what Jesus has done the most appropriate response is to give Him praise for His saving work. If He is your Savior, if you are trusting only in His finished work on the cross to make you right with Father God, then praising Him should come very easy.

Not only my story but also my song. We can choose to sing many different ones but we must sing Jesus and our assurance in Him first and foremost. One song says, “Worthy of every song we could ever sing.” I could not have said, or sung it any better. He alone is worthy of all praise.

Spirit, help me sing of Jesus.

All the day long? Really? Really. We must never grow weary of declaring our praise to and of Jesus. Whether horizontal, to other humans, or vertical, to God alone, His praise must remain on our lips as long as we have breath. Commit today to praise Him all the days of your life.

Lord, I commit to praise you all my days.

Take a few moments to talk to Jesus about what has surfaced in your heart, or just listen to what He is saying to you, then we will sing once more.

As we continue our journey through this classic text and hymn, think about what it will mean to sincerely offer each part of your life and your entire life to God. It requires diligence and intentionality. Thanks for joining us in this grand pursuit. Let’s think about this.

What Are You Watching For?

The answer to that question reveals a lot. It shows where our eyes are fixed. That tells us where are hearts are.

Like a mom waiting for her little one to return home from school that first day of kindergarten. Waiting for that bus to round the corner. Watching for the return of one who is exceedingly precious.

Why do we spend so little time thinking about where we will spend eternity?

Or, why so we spend so much time thinking about our lives here which will soon pass away?

Some might say it is because we prefer to occupy our thoughts with that which is directly before us. Others might say it is because we would prefer to avoid thinking what comes after this life. Both views may develop from the reality that waiting is hard and so we would rather avoid it if we could, either by thinking of something else, or simply trying not to think about it at all.

Waiting for our blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ, Titus 2:13 ESV

Though my standing is in Christ the moment I surrender to Him I still long for the day when I will finally see Him face to face. It is His appearing for which my soul waits. I watch for it, looking to the skies for Him to make His return and take me to my eternal dwelling place with Him.

There is an incredible blessing in learning to live in Christ, but greater still is the delight that will be ours when we are finally in His presence eternally. To that end, we learn to watch and wait for His return because of the promise it holds. Ask the Spirit to remind you to look up.

RESONATE!

Take a few moments and consider what you are watching for. The Spirit will reveal it to you if you genuinely seek to know.. Pray this simple prayer, “Spirit, remind me to look up.” Then lift your gaze above this earthly plane.

What Are You Longing For?

Filled with His goodness lost in His love

For me, it is often a quiet walk through the woods. To hear the birds and even just the wind whistling through the trees. To be still and alone with God.

That is my sacred pathway. What is yours? How do you cultivate an ever-increasing awareness of God’s presence?

That is really what you are longing for. True, we look for it in many other places and even accept counterfeits, but we do not have to. God wants to fill us with His goodness and help us to get lost in His love, which basically means to allow everything else to become less important that Him.

And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose. Romans 8:28 ESV

As I find myself more and more in Christ, surrendered to His will, looking above for His return, I am assured of His goodness and love. That does not mean things never seem bad, but I can rest in the fact that He is working them together for good because He loves me. Hallelujah!

Even while we wait we are overwhelmed by His goodness and love toward us. This is remarkable for we still live in a fallen world filled with hatred and badness. His presence with us in the midst of them is a blessing beyond measure. Thank the Lord for His presence.

RESONATE!
It is so essential to identify what is important to us. There is one thing that truly satisfies our deepest longing as is unattainable through any action of our own. The presence of God. Is that what you are truly longing for? Pray simply, “Lord, thank You for Your presence.” 

Lord, thank You for Your goodness and love. They flow from Your presence so please help me to long for more of You, and even look for You everyday. In Jesus name. Amen.

Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. Matthew 11:29 ESV

What is the best way to find rest for your soul? Submit to God. Taking His yoke means learning His ways. When we determine to do that we position ourselves to learn how to rest even in the midst of our doing, because we remove the toil of wrestling with God. Take His yoke.

I in my Savior am happy and blest

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places, Ephesians 1:3 ESV

Where is the most certain place to find happiness and blessing? In Christ. But what does that mean? I am no longer more concerned about my purposes and ways, but am learning to surrender to His. My life is hid with God in Christ. There I am happy and blest.

How Can a Yoke Lead to Rest?

The beast of burden pictured above conjures all kinds of thoughts I imagine. The point of it for our purposes here is to illustrate something Jesus taught. It pertains to the connection between a yoke and rest.

A yoke is the collar worn by an ox or other animal that connects to different tools and allow a farmer to use the power of the animal to assist his work, i.e. planting, cultivating or harvesting.  When Jesus used that term in addressing his largely agrerian audience, they would have understand what He was teaching. We might not.

Jesus is teaching that the yoke of His words was much lighter than that of the religious leaders and Pharisees. Taking His yoke would lead to rest as opposed to constant turmoil, labor and uncertainty. Their yoke was very heavy and His was not.

When we learn Jesus’ way and being to walk in it we find a rest for our souls that was before unimaginable. But it is still work. Simply not nearly as toilsome as others we might choose.

What is the best way to find rest for your soul? Submit to God. Taking His yoke means learning His ways. When we determine to do that we position ourselves to learn how to rest even in the midst of our doing, because we remove the toil of wrestling with God. Take His yoke.

When we learn to submit perfectly to God’s will we discover the marvel of things coming to a place of rest in our souls. That does not mean there is no chaos around us, simply that there is none within us. All is at rest. Ask God to help you discover that today.

RESONATE!
Take a few moments ask God to show you how well you know HIs yoke. People often think they know God better than they actually do. Be certain that is not the case for you. Make this your simple prayer today “God, help me discover Your rest through surrender.” Then trust Jesus to help you it.

Living IN Jesus

I in my Savior am happy and blest

Maybe even more difficult to understand than finding rest in …… is how to live IN Jesus. Much of our evangelical language creates imagery of Jesus coming to live in our hearts, in us, and while this is true it could be limiting our understanding of what it means to give our lives to Christ and find new life in Him. Think about it this way.

When you walk outside and the sun is shining you are walking in the light. The presence of the sunlight is everywhere. You can bask in it and enjoy it’s warmth and brightness or you can shield yourself from it’s effect.

In a similar way, when you surrender your life to Christ and begin your walk with Him you are walking in the Son. His presence is everywhere. You can bask in it and enjoy His warmth and brightness or you can shield yourself from it’s effect.

The choice is yours.

There is an inextricable connection between your happiness and your living in Christ. Are there happy people who know nothing of Christ? Of course, but it could be argued there happiness is not an enduring, eternal one, but a more temporary, temporal one. Still happiness, just not like that which a Son-follower an know at the deepest level. That is what the hymn writer is asserting.

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places, Ephesians 1:3 ESV

Jesus, thank You for the light and life of Your presence. Help me to walk every day with a greater awareness of these incredible truths. In Jesus’ name. Amen!

Special Delivery

Who? Where? and What?

Those are the three questions answered in the last part of the stanza. We will examine the first two here and the last one below. First, let us consider Who?

Angels, that’s who. There are many references to these messengers of God throughout the Scripture, but not many in the songs we sing. I imagine that is because they are a bit mysterious. The descriptions of them, their appearances, and their activity evoke a degree of awe.

On this occasion they are simply mentioned and attributed with a task. That task is straight-forward and consistent with what they are often doing in the Bible, serving as messengers for God. In this stanza the writer says they are bringing “echoes of mercy and whispers of love”. Both seem word-based, that is echoes and whispers, the kids of things we night imagine a messenger would deliver. Messages. We will look at this more below.

What of their origin, these “echoes” and “whispers”? The writer simply offers “above”. We associate heaven with the skies above because that is at least one definition of the word itself, which resonates with us as God’s dwelling since the Scripture often describes God as being over all.

Accordingly, our eyes trail up in an effort to catch a glimpse of their journey down to us. That is reasonable and fair, but is also limited by our understanding, which God is not. All that to say, we should remain aware that God has angelic servants that do His bidding, and some of that bidding is to help us in our pursuit of Him and His will.

Angels descending bring from above

For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways. On their hands they will bear you up, lest you strike your foot against a stone. Psalm 91:11-12 ESV

After rejoicing over our repentance, God’s angels are then commanded to descend and first of all help us by guarding our way. I wonder how many times I might have fallen if it had not been for the lifting work of the God’s angels in my life? They descend to bear us up. Hallelujah!

Angels descend bringing things from the Father to us. What an incredible and powerful truth! God sends His messengers to us to bring us what we need. This becomes our story and our song when we determine to praise our Savior. Look up. Help is on the way!

RESONATE!

Take a few moments and consider this incredible truth, God is sending you help through His angels. Sometimes we feel like we are alone, but that is never true. Pray this simple prayer, “Jesus, thank You for sending me the help of our angelic servants.” Then trust Him and them to do their work.

Echoes of mercy whispers of love

Again, let’s remember our context. Perfect submission, perfect delight. That is the scenario described in the opening line of this stanza.

What unfolds from there is a remarkable sight, and sound. It engages at least the eyes and ears. The writer speaks of visions that evoke joy, including seeing angels descending bringing…

Echoes of mercy whispers of love

In all their affliction he was afflicted, and the angel of his presence saved them; in his love and in his pity he redeemed them; he lifted them up and carried them all the days of old. Isaiah 63:9 ESV

And here is that lifting work again, a demonstration of His love and mercy toward us. The angelic presence which saves us, walking along with us in our afflictions. It certainly makes it easier to sing the praises of Jesus when you know His presence during your affliction.

What may bring that affliction? Sometimes choices that do not honor God, that are not in line with His will. But sometimes the Lord even allows affliction when we are on His path. Why would He do that? To help us trust Him even when things are difficult which is and imperative for a life of faith.

And things do get very difficult sometimes. But when they do we can be confident that God is with us sending us all the help we need for our situation. How can we be confident of this? Two words.

Mercy and love. Who would not welcome more of those into their lives? What a beautiful description of the things God sends to us by way of His angelic messengers. What kind of echoes do you need to hear today? Ask the Spirit to open your ears to hear.

RESONATE!
It is so important to listen for what God is saying to us. Life can get so noisy it is hard to hear God and the messages He is sending. Try to get quiet for some time today and just listen for those whispers. Pray simply, “Spirit, open my ears to hear those echoes.” 

Father thank You for Your visions, echoes and whispers. They bring me joy like nothing else. Help me to look and listen for them everyday, but especially when things are rough. In Jesus name. Amen.

Welcome to Thursday Thoughts at Resonant 7, where we reflect on the reality of God and resolve to let it resound in our lives, repeatedly. Let’s think about this.

Perfect submission perfect delight

I delight to do your will, O my God; your law is within my heart. Psalm 40:8 ESV

When we begin to walk in the assurance of Jesus a new way of seeing the world opens before us. We begin to learn the delight of knowing and doing the will of God, but even still that is not an easy path. We need help. Thanks be to God He gives it. Delight in submitting to Jesus.

Visions of rapture now burst on my sight

Just so, I tell you, there is joy before the angels of God over one sinner who repents. Luke 15:10 ESV

One soul turning to Jesus causes joy among the servants of God, both earthly and heavenly. Oh for eyes to see the response of the angels over our repentance. It pleases God when we turn to Him, but it also pleases the angels of God, and weclomes their work on our behalf.
