Share the story of His glow

Welcome to Wednesday Wanderings with Dr. Sherri–a time we set aside to wander in the Presence of Jesus and ponder His truths. When you are ready, prepare your mind, body, and soul to have a transformational encounter with Jesus.

PREPARATION: In our last Wandering with Dr. Sherri, we examined How the Story Ends. This week we will examine Tell It.  When you are ready, you may begin the dialogue with Jesus and state: “Jesus, I invite you to help me to leisurely wander into your Presence. Prepare my heart to receive, and illuminate my spiritual senses to encounter you.”

 PROMISE: Psalm 104:1-3 Amplified Bible

Psalm 104

Praise the Lord, my Soul
Lord my God, you are great;
The Lord wraps Himself in light as with a garment;
He stretches out the heavens like a tent and
lays the beams of His upper chambers on their waters.

God, our Creator you are magnificent. Your glorious might and grace are not something I can keep silent about. I must share the story of your glow.

William Kethe (?-1594); Robert Grant (1779-1838)

O tell of His might O sing of His grace
Whose robe is the light whose canopy space
His chariots of wrath the deep thunderclouds form
And dark is His path on the wings of the storm

Grant’s writing was influenced by William Kethe’s paraphrase of Psalm 104 in the Anglo-Genevan Psalter. Psalm 104 begins with the invitation to Praise the Lord, my Soul. Both authors agreed the story of God’s mighty, marvelous, and gracious works should be shared.

PARABLE:  I sat on the hot sand with my great-nieces, scooping the sand with our hands and trying to count the morsels. The waves of the Atlantic Ocean turned the sand into a thick mud clay that we formed into a heart. The grains of sand are too many to count. The waves of the ocean are too mysterious to judge. The big waves that seem as though they are going to overtake you gently land at the foot of the sand statue. The small waves that appear as if they will stop before reaching the sand wash up past the shore. 

The light and warmth of the sun kisses our skin and darkens our melanin. Eventually, without warning, the warm waves wash away the sand statue and leave our bodies cloaked with sand that takes days to find and even longer to cleanse. Our tans, our glow, our smiles tell the story that we experienced something marvelous. There is no figuring out the wonders of the sand and sea. We realize that the sand is not there for us to count. The waves are not there for us to predict. Both are just marvelous works for us to enjoy and opportunities for us to create stories that we can share.

We marvel at the encounter. We recognize that the mighty SON, full of grace and love, has shown on us. We are reminded of His SON kisses when we see the canopy of stars by night and the light of the sun by day. When we hear the roar of thunder and feel the cleansing rain. When we hear the giggle of a child and see the tears of the parent. The residue of his loving mercy, compassion and grace leaves traces of His touch and a glow of His Presence that we can’t trace. Our glow, our joy tell the story that we experienced something marvelous. It prompts the response of praise! We have to share the story of His mighty works.

There is no figuring out the wonders of God’s love. Unending grace is not for us to count. God’s mighty acts are not for us to predict. All are just marvelous works of His hand and opportunities for us to share the story of His glow so that others too may praise His wondrous works! What story will you tell of God’s marvelous works? What song will you sing of His gracious love? 

Soul care training exercise:  Take a moment and turn your attention to seeking the loving Presence of God. Ponder the question What story can I share of God’s marvelous, mighty, and gracious acts? Reflect and let the Holy Spirit reveal to you what God wants to say to you about the story of His mighty and marvelous acts and gracious love?

Notice without judgment and with a curious awareness of what comes to your mind. Invite God into your sanctified imagination. Ask Him to bring to your attention what He wants you to know.

  • Next scan your mind and notice what the Holy Spirit is sharing that you need to know, hear, or do to share the story of His mighty, marvelous, and gracious love. Expand your thoughts, it may be something you never heard told this way before.
  • Finally, Focus on what you see and hear. Allow praise to form within you. Take a deep breath in and release a song unto the Lord.

PRAYER: Father, you are the Great Creator. Help me to notice the glow of your glory and to share the story of your wondrous and mighty works and gracious love. In the name of Jesus I pray, Amen. 

PRAISE: Now that you have emptied your mind of the clutter and wandered with Jesus, take a closing moment to praise God for a good ending. Then take the mindfulness of God’s glorious glow in these last few minutes of wandering into the next ones and beyond.

As we continue our journey through this ancient hymn prepare to get in on the worship. If you are going to issue this call to worship with any authenticity you need to make certain you are engaged in worship. Let’s tune our hearts.

How Do You Use Your Voice?

Every day we use our voice in many ways. We call a friend. We sing a song. We warn someone of danger. We heap praise on someone for a job well done. and the list goes on.

But how often do we use our voices for the most noble of pursuits, making God known?

As we come to know God ourselves we must be quick to begin to make Him known. It should become a part of our normal routine and common usage of our vocal capacities. If it is not, start small and use your voice for God today. Then repeat it again tomorrow. If you do this is will not be long before you are routinely telling and singing.

O tell of His might O sing of His grace

Sing to the Lord, bless his name; tell of his salvation from day to day. Declare his glory among the nations, his marvelous works among all the peoples! Psalm 96:2-3 ESV

Sing and tell. That is what we are supposed to do once we have come to understand the matchless might and glorious grace of our King. Will you commit today to do it? Use both your speaking and your singing voice to make His might and grace known as often as you can.

Our King brings together might and grace in a remarkable way and we must employ both our speaking and our singing to make that truth known. We use our voices for many other purpose but when did you last use each of them for those? How about today?

 

RESONATE!
Take a few moments and ask God to show you how you are using your voice. Maybe there are some ways you should start using it more, and other ways you should use it less. Make this your simple prayer today “Lord, help me use my voice to make you known.” Then trust Him to help you do it.

Light and Dark

Whose robe is the light whose canopy space

As much as might and grace may be perceived as opposite ends of the spectrum, it is undeniably true that light and dark are the epitome of extremes. Though they could be no more different than they are, God is present in both of them. Just as present in the black hole as He is in the center of the brightest star.

We begin to wrap our minds around this truth and quickly realize we are going to need some help. God present in light, sure. But God equally present in darkness? What?!?

God is present in the stars that light up the night sky. He is no less present in any of the black spaces between them. The same is true in the light and dark places of our existence. When you go through darkness, you are never alone. God was there before you arrived and will still be there when you have move on.

…You are clothed with splendor and majesty,
  covering yourself with light as with a garment,
    stretching out the heavens like a tent. Psalm 104:1b-2 ESV

Now we are talking. This King we worship is able to make a garment out of light! As if that description were not incredible enough it continues by declaring that His dwelling place is the entirety of the heavens, even space itself. This is the One we worship. He is worthy!

Clothed with bright light and dwelling in dark space. This is our God again bringing together two extremes, here light and dark. He is present in both and both serve His purposes. Which is harder for you to imagine? His presence in light or dark? Ask Him to show you Himself there.

RESONATE!
Take a few moments and consider how God is present in both light and dark. There is simply nowhere He is not. Pray a simple prayer like this one, “Father, show me Your presence in light and dark.” Then trust the Spirit to help you practice that every day.

God, thank You for being present in light and dark. It reminds me I am never alone. Continually expand my mind to take the reality of You in. In Jesus’ name. Amen!

Our King brings together might and grace in a remarkable way and we must employ both our speaking and our singing to make that truth known. We use our voices for many other purpose but when did you last use each of them for those? How about today?

Lord, help me use my voice to make you known.

Clothed with bright light and dwelling in dark space. This is our God again bringing together two extremes, here light and dark. He is present in both and both serve His purposes. Which is harder for you to imagine? His presence in light or dark? Ask Him to show you Himself there.

Father, show me Your presence in light and dark.

Thunderclouds are formed in the wake of His wrathful chariots, as He moves about the heavens accomplishing His divine purposes. What do you imagine stirs up that wrath? Ask Him to reveal that to you and then respond in wonder and worship.

God, reveal what stirs up Your wrath.

The wings of the storm? Like the edges, or that which causes the storm to move. The imagery here is very powerful. Darkness, wrath, storms and thunder, God on the move revealing His might. What impact on you and your worship will that revelation have today?

Spirit, help me respond in worship.

Take a few moments to talk to Jesus about what has surfaced in your heart, or just listen to what He is saying to you, then we will sing once more.

Sing

Take the awareness of God’s presence cultivated in these last few minutes into the next ones and beyond.  Until next time,Be Resonant.

As we continue our journey through this classic text and hymn, think about what it will mean to sincerely offer each part of your life and your entire life to God. It requires diligence and intentionality. Thanks for joining us in this grand pursuit. Let’s think about this.

Ancient of Days

The name used for God in this line conjures up some powerful images. This One who is our Shield and Defender has been around a long time and rules over all. The image above originally published in 1794 by William Blake is a depiction of the Ancient of Days marking off “the horizon on the face of the deep” as told in Proverbs 8:27. He told the horizon where it would be. He made the deep.

This hymn is meant to evoke a worshipful response from singer and listener alike. This imagery is very useful in that regard. Look at the horizon, consider the depths, and worship that ones who carefully draws the boundaries of each.

If He was careful and meticulous in how He crafted these things should our response not be as well? Do you believe He who made all we see and even what we can not see protects you from the same? That He is indeed your Shield and Defender?

Our Shield and Defender the Ancient of Days

“As I looked, thrones were placed, and the Ancient of Days took his seat; his clothing was white as snow, and the hair of his head like pure wool; his throne was fiery flames; its wheels were burning fire. Daniel 7:9 ESV

This is an incredible description of this King we worship. A throne of fiery flames inspires awe in my heart. How about you? This same One is our Shield and Defender which reveals He is not only concerned about His glory, but also our good. Do you long to see Him face-to-face?

Not only has He redeemed us but He also protects us. This does not mean that we do not suffer or go through painful things for we live in a fallen world. It does remind us that we never do so alone. What do you need shielded from or defended against today?

 

 

RESONATE!
Take a few moments and think about your image of God. Can the image above fit within that. If not, do you need to expand it? Pray this simple prayer, “Spirit, help me rest in Your protection today.” Then trust Him to help you do just that.

Pavilioned in Splendor

Pavilioned in Splendor and Girded with Praise

We can look into the skies and imagine what heaven must be like in terms of the arena in creates for God’s throne. What is more difficult for us to envision is the praise that circles that throne. Not only ours but that of all of God’s people across all time and space.

Oh that we could see the praise like we can see the splendor, or at least the representation of it in images like this sunset! Our ears can truly not even begin to conceive how marvelous that sound is and will be. We simply can not hear, but God can.

He hears the praise of His people. Every one. Simultaneously. Concurrently.

Will you join that incredible reality? Offer your worship to God right now and you will be a part of encircling Him with praise. It is that simple.

Pavilioned in splendor and girded with praise

May the glory of the Lord endure forever;
    may the Lord rejoice in his works,
 who looks on the earth and it trembles,
    who touches the mountains and they smoke! Psalms 104:31-32 ESV

A pavilion made by His glorious creation and praise rising up from all His creatures, what a magnificent picture. Lift your gaze today to the One whose glory will endure forever, and Who rejoices in His works, of which you are One. Marvel at His majesty and join the praise!

The heavens create a pavilion which puts the glory of our King on display, and the rest of creation declares His praise as well, but are you doing your part? Are you adding your praise to the cacophony of creation or are you mostly silent? Lift your voice in worship today!

RESONATE!
Are you a part of that encircling? Do you regularly offer your praise to God? Do it right now. Play the track above and sing along with it. Pray simply, “Lord, empower my praise.” 

Lord, thank You for allowing me the privilege of encircling You praise. How kind of You to reveal Yourself to me and invite me in. Help me to find my place it in every day. In Jesus name. Amen.

What a fantastic opening to this classic hymn! An admonition to bless the Lord complete with the reasons why. He is the glorious King over all. We look into the skies which tell of His glory and join them in declaring His splendor and majesty. Will you extend the call to worship today?

And gratefully sing His power and His love

I will give to the Lord the thanks due to his righteousness, and I will sing praise to the name of the Lord, the Most High. Psalm 7:17 ESV

We sing praise to Him for His work in creation and the way that His work in re-creation brings together His power and His love. With grateful hearts we extol the Lord with our lips and with our lives for none is worthy of our worship but this King, our King! Gratefully sing!

All Glorious Above

Just look up.

What you see will inspire you on so many levels.

  • We are infinitely small
  • Creation is infinitely large
  • This evokes worship from deep within, but Who is the object
  • There must be a grand design behind it all, look at the artistry
  • There must be a designer, who is also quite an artist
  • I will worship the Creator

Looking up has always generated a great deal of awe within my soul. Even before I knew who the object of my worship was, I wanted to offer it. This hymn gives voice to so many of the reasons the Pslamists give for offering our worship to God, yet still we must choose to respond. Will you hold back you praise today or offer it freely?

O worship the King all glorious above

Our eternal occupation complete with the reason why it will be. There is no one like our King and we must welcome others into the grand procession made up of His worshippers. We must not keep His glory to ourselves. How will you make it known today?

Take a few moments and ask God to reveal His glory to you. Maybe step outside and look up as you do. Make this your simple prayer today “Father, help me make Your glory known.” Then trust Him to help you live it.

Gratefully Sing

And gratefully sing His power and His love

When we begin to have a sense of just our worship our King is our response is offering Him the worship He alone deserves. But maybe you do not see yourself as much of a singer. Please do not let that stop you!

We live in such a performance culture that many Christians are afraid of showing off, or not measuring up. This keeps them from singing sometimes and that is sad. A grateful heart should always be free to express that gratitude, not to mention our King is worthy of an eternity of it.

And gratefully sing His power and His love

I will give to the Lord the thanks due to his righteousness, and I will sing praise to the name of the Lord, the Most High. Psalm 7:17 ESV

We sing praise to Him for His work in creation and the way that His work in re-creation brings together His power and His love. With grateful hearts we extol the Lord with our lips and with our lives for none is worthy of our worship but this King, our King! Gratefully sing!

Not only sing, but gratefully sing. He is worthy of such songs because He has put on display a combination of power and love that is unparalleled. He put His power to work on our behalf declaring His love for us on the cross where He defeated death. Hallelujah!

Take a few moments and consider how you will gratefully sing today. Ponder the cross for a moment and let your gratitude simply well up into a song of praise. Pray a simple prayer like this one, “Jesus, help me sing grateful songs.” Then trust the Spirit to help you practice that every day.

Jesus, thank You all You have done. Your work in creation and re-creation both inspire songs of grateful praise. I will offer them to You as long as I have breath. In Jesus’ name. Amen!

What Do You Sing About?

You know. When no one is listening and a song just erupts from your lips almost without you even thinking about it at all. Maybe it is a love song. Maybe it is a sad one. Maybe a song of praise.

The line we are focusing on in this section is obviously “This is my song“. I want to to make it a question which will give you the opportunity to think about it. “Is this my song?” Is the assurance of salvation is Christ the thing you are inclined to sing about. Certainly, the writer is speaking poetically to some extent, waxing eloquently about singing songs to Jesus, but he is also speaking practically, actually singing about Jesus.

So how would you answer the question? Maybe take just 60 seconds and think about it?

How you answer it may reveal a lot about what prompts those spontaneous songs. Maybe you are surprised and maybe not. Either way you can make different choices if you want.

The Lord is our story and our song, because He has become our salvation. For this reason we make the commitment, like the Psalmist here to praise and exalt Him. He is not only someone we sing about, and sing to, He actually is the song itself. Think about that.

Not only my story but also my song. We can choose to sing many different ones but we must sing Jesus and our assurance in Him first and foremost. One song says, “Worthy of every song we could ever sing.” I could not have said, or sung it any better. He alone is worthy of all praise.

What song will you sing to Jesus today?

Take a few moments and consider what you sing about. If this heart check revealed a need to sing more about Jesus make a plan to do that. Pray this simple prayer, “Spirit, help me sing of Jesus.” Then turn on a song that gives Him praise, turn it up and sing along.

All the day long!

Praising my Savior all the day long

So does that mean all I do all day long every day is sing praise songs to Jesus? No, but it certainly includes singing. The line says “praising…all day”. Everything we do can be done in a way that praises God, that brings glory to Him.

Do a quick evaluation of your day today? Were there things that you did that honored God? Choices you made that were driven by your desire to give Him glory? Words or actions that were done because you want to bring Him praise?

We are NOT always singing, but we should be always praising.

Praising my Savior all the day long

My mouth is filled with your praise, and with your glory all the day. Psalm 71:8 ESV

Mouths filled with praise makes sense, but what do you think it means for our mouths to be filled with glory? When we are declaring His praise our mouths are filled with the glory of who He is, and this should be the case all day, every day. Use your mouth for glory.

All the day long? Really? Really. We must never grow weary of declaring our praise to and of Jesus. Whether horizontal, to other humans, or vertical, to God alone, His praise must remain on our lips as long as we have breath. Commit today to praise Him all the days of your life.

What are some ways you could praise Jesus without ever saying a word? Forgive someone. Feed the hungry. Care for the sick. Visit the prisoner. So many more. Pray simply, “Lord, I commit to praise you all my days.” 

Lord, thank You for giving me something to sing about. Even when I am not singing help my life to bring you glory. In Jesus name. Amen.

Welcome to Thursday Thoughts at Resonant 7, where we reflect on the reality of God and resolve to let it resound in our lives, repeatedly. Let’s think about this.

And this is the testimony, that God gave us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. 1 John 5:11 ESV

Before we find the assurance of eternal life in Jesus, we are each living a very different story. When we find rest in what He has accomplished for us our story changes dramatically as we begin to testify or tell the world the story of Jesus with our lives.

Praising my Savior all the day long

Praise the Lord! For it is good to sing praises to our God; for it is pleasant, and a song of praise is fitting. Psalm 147:1 ESV

One of the ways we testify is by giving praise to God. Sometimes we speak that praise and other times we sing it, but most importantly it becomes our way of life. Is praising your Savior something you do regularly, or occasionally? Commit to doing it more every day.
