As we continue our journey through this classic hymn, ask yourself again today upon what are you truly building your hope. Let’s tune our hearts.

Weakness

Here comes another difficult admission. I am weak. This is not something most of us are inclined to acknowledge, but it is a feeling with which all of us are acquainted.

And not only weak, but full of weakness. One might say weak in many ways, or maybe even weak in every way. Ouch!

The state or condition of lacking strength is not a happy or enviable place to be. The awareness you are there, however, is the first step toward going somewhere else, and the somewhere else that God has in store for you is a much better place. You must be willing to accept and acknowledge your weakness if you are going to begin the journey.

I am weakness full of weakness 

Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. Romans 8:26 ESV

We are weak. This is one of the first things the Holy Spirit reveals to us. Thankfully when He does, we are already engaged in receiving His help. He helps us pray the very things we need the most, needs too deep for words. Thank Him for revealing your weakness to you. 

We acknowledge our weakness at the start of our journey with the Spirit, but that is only the beginning. Acknowledging our weakness must become a regular occurrence, as we learn to live in the Spirit. It is the pathway to His power. Tell Him again you are full of weakness.

RESONATE!
Take a few moments and confess the painful truth of your weakness. “Spirit, I am weakness, full of weakness.” The good news is the Spirit already knows that and is ready and willing to meet you right there in your weakened state. Thank Him that admitting your weakness is not the destination but the starting point.

Bowed Down

Though weakness is something each of us is acquainted with, humility is not. Often our response to our weakness is posturing and masking so we do not have to be honest with ourselves or God, let alone the wider world. If you are willing to admit your weakness, are you ready to take things to the next level and humble yourself before God by bowing down in His presence?

Is the idea of bowing down a new one to you? Maybe you have thought of this posture as simply a figurative one, humbling your heart and mind to God. While it does begin there, it is so much more as well.

Many Christians have never experienced the release that comes from kneeling before God. Dropping to your knees is a simple position of humility that can produce profound results in our hearts. Maybe the idea is not new to you, but have you practiced it? Have you ever done it? Have you knelt down before God acknowledging your utter weakness before His incomprehensible might?

Simply be careful. Taking the posture without meaning it is more than meaningless. It is an affront to the omniscience of God. He knows your heart, so be certain your heart matches the posture.

At Thy sacred feet I bow

And he who searches hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God. Romans 8:27 ESV

As we humble ourselves before Him, he prays for us according to the will of God. That surrender and submission is crucial to our embracing the work of the Spirit in our lives. He searches our hearts and prays for us. Thank Him for praying for you.

Acknowledging our weakness positions us humbly before the Spirit. It allows us to bow down before His Holy Presence and prepares us to receive His power by confessing we have none. Tell the Spirit you will bow down before Him today and every day.

RESONATE!
Take a few moments and determine if you are ready to kneel in the presence of the One who knows your weakness and loves you still. Ask the Spirit to search your heart even now and help you embrace this posture of humility. Then when you are ready, kneel and pray, “Spirit, I bow before Your sacred presence.”

Spirit, thank You for revealing to me that I am full of weakness and enabling me to confess that. In my weakness, teach me to kneel in Your presence and prepare myself to receive your power. In Jesus’ name. Amen!

He empowers us to reflect God with our lives and deflect glory to Him. This is miraculous when you consider we start out full of weakness and is another expression of His incredible work in us. Only with His power could that work occur. Ask for that filling again today.

Spirit, fill me with Your power.

Take a few moments to talk to Jesus about what has surfaced in your heart, or just listen to what He is saying to you, then we will sing once more.

Full

He can fill us. This is a simple acknowledgement but a very important one. If we are going to pursue the fullness of God through the filling of His Spirit, it is imperative that we believe it is possible. This should not be simply a mental acknowledgment but a deep-rooted faith.

Think of your faith life in terms of heart, soul, mind, and strength, the totality of you. Imagine you are a glass like the one pictured. The Spirit can fill that glass with the refreshing water of His presence. He has the ability and desire to do so.

Whatever was in the glass before, He gently displaces without changing the form of the glass. The Spirit does this in you. That act is one of unmistakeable grace.

Thou canst fill me gracious Spirit

All these are empowered by one and the same Spirit, who apportions to each one individually as he wills. 1 Corinthians 12:11 ESV

The Spirit can fill us and graciously chooses to do so, according to His will. He imparts to us the very Presence of God when He fills us. This is such a remarkable and undeserved transaction, a grace we could never merit yet is freely bestowed. Thank Him for filling and empowering you.

There is no question of the Spirit’s ability to fill those who have yielded their lives to God and His ways. Equally, there is no question that His doing so is an act of grace, giving us what we do not deserve. Thank the Spirit for His ability and willingness to graciously fill you.

Spirit, thank You for graciously filling me.

RESONATE!
Take a few moments and thank the Spirit. He wants to fill you and keep you filled. Will you ask Him right not to do that work? Simply pray, “Spirit, come and fill me.”

A Mystery, Not a Secret

The inability to explain this life-altering reality and our need of it is not based so much on an unwillingness, but rather, the genuine lack of understanding exactly how it happens. We know He can fill us, we simply do not know how He does. It is simultaneously a certainty and a mystery.

It is not a secret. On the contrary, we should be quick to point to His influence when anyone observes a change in us. And if we allow Him to exercise this mystery in us, there will be discernible changes in our words and actions.

Though I cannot tell Thee how

We do not know how He fills us or why He chooses to do so the way He does, yet we marvel at the kindness. What we should pray for is more of Him, but we often get caught in smaller interests. Still He prays for us for what we truly need. Spirit, intercede for me today.

It is a mystery, this filling work of the Holy Spirit. We can not measure it but the effect of it is certainly perceptible. We can not watch it and yet the impact can be witnessed. We struggle to explain or define it though we know it is true. Praise the Spirit for doing the unexplainable.

Spirit, I praise You for doing the unexplainable.

Take a few moments and reflect on this mystery. Now give Him praise for doing it in you. 

Spirit, thank You for filling me. Thank you that even though I can not explain it, I have felt the reality of it. Teach me to long for that work every moment of every day.  In Jesus’ name. Amen!

One of the greatest truths in the history of mankind, we need God. We need His presence, and the peace and power which flow from it. Without Him, we are weak and frail. We must routinely acknowledge our great need of Him. Do it now.

Spirit, I need You.

Again this is the prayer we must learn to pray willingly and often. We invite Him to come, to make His presence known to us, meeting us where we are, as we are. We ask Him to fill us, saturating our souls with Himself, moment by moment. Pray that prayer again now.

Spirit, come and fill me now.

As we begin our journey through this classic hymn, ask yourself again today if you truly know the presence of the Holy Spirit. Let’s tune our hearts.

Fire

As we ponder this prayer for filling over the next few weeks open your heart to the work of the Holy Spirit. Sometimes because we are afraid of what the Spirit may do we choose no fire over false fire. We prefer powerless safety over what we perceive as the potential danger of fire from on high.

Even this first line opens the door to that risk. If you are going to pray this prayer at all it must be done earnestly. Keep that in mind as you consider each line, and whether or not you will ask God to do it in you.

Hover o’er me Holy Spirit

And divided tongues as of fire appeared to them and rested on each one of them. Acts 2:3 ESV

The Spirit came to the disciples on the Day of Pentecost. Like flames of fire He hovered over each one of them. He wants to come and hover over each of us as well, but we must position ourselves like the early disciples. Are you waiting on the Holy Spirit?

Those first disciples experienced tongues of fire resting above each of them. This will likely not be your experience, so be careful not to long for it, and miss His presence. He wants to hover over your life. Invite Him to come and hover over you.

RESONATE!
Take a few moments and ask the Spirit to hover over you. Confess you are not longing for an experience as mush as an encounter with God. Quiet yourself before Him and ask Him to begin to prepare you to be filled by removing an preconceived notions of what that make look or sound like. 

Bathed

I can not even fathom what that experience must have been like. They had been through so much since the crucifixion of Jesus: His resurrection and ascension, His command to return to Jerusalem and wait, weeks of hoping and praying, and now this. How must they have felt?

I am certain I would have been trembling as the wind rushed into that room and the flames of the Spirit hovered over each of their heads. Though our experience may be different from theirs it is no less miraculous. God chooses to bathe our hearts and minds with His very presence. Like them, we are never the same.

Jesus had instructed them that power would come upon them. Were they praying for power? He had told them they would be witnesses. Were they praying for those opportunities? Probably both and so much more. Then the Spirit bathed them in His presence. How we long for that same power and to be witnesses like them so that others may know the love of God.

Bathe my trembling heart and brow

…God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us. Romans 5:5b ESV

He wants to do more than hover over us, He wants to bathe us in His presence, cleansing and purifying us so we are prepared to serve Him. His Spirit ushers His transforming love into our hearts and changes us.

When the Spirit begins to reveal Himself to us, it is an overwhelming feeling and concept, engaging both the heart and the mind. We may find ourselves trembling in His presence as He envelopes us. Ask the Spirit to bathe your heart and brow.

Spirit, bathe my trembling heart and brow.

RESONATE!
Take a few moments and quiet your heart and mind. Then pray this simple prayer, “Spirit, bathe my trembling heart and brow.” Remember, you are not looking for tongues of fire, but the unmistakeable presence of God.

Spirit, thank You for coming at Pentecost. You demonstrated Your willingness to be with us then, and we believe You still want to. Help us prepare for your coming by praying and waiting like those first disciples.  In Jesus’ name. Amen!

Oh, to be filled with the fullness of God. That is what the Spirit does when He fills us. He consumes us with an awareness of the holy presence of God. He is without fault or blemish and to be filled with that perfection is life-changing. Beg for that filling today.

Spirit, fill me with Your holy presence.

It is not a demanding request, but one of desperation. It is not a command, but a gentle query. Come, and fill me now. Have you ever prayed such a prayer? “Spirit please come and fill me now.” If so, you can pray it again. If not, will you consider doing it today?

Spirit, come, o come and fill me now.
