As we continue our journey through this beloved hymn come with fresh ears. Sometimes a song can be so familiar some of the meaning can get lost. Try to reclaim a bit of this one as we look deeply at these words. Let’s tune our hearts.
What’s Causing Your Waves?
We all face them. Even people of faith. Things come which make waves, disrupting our peaceful journey.
What circumstances in your life are causing your waves? Maybe you do not even realize them. Maybe you are surprised you have lasted this long without capsizing, so great is the tossing. Acknowledging they are there is the beginning of getting mastery over them. Are you ready to do that?
Just as I am though tossed about
But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind. James 1:6 ESV
Sometimes we are more affected by things outside of ourselves than inside. Like the waves of the seas that are tossed about so our souls are flung around by the circumstances of our lives. Even still God welcomes us to come just like that to Him and find peace.
Life can be very hard. Things come at us sometimes like the waves in a storm, one after another, relentlessly. We are tossed about like a small boat, helpless to overcome them. Still, God allows us to ride on the tops of those waves if we look to Him. Ask Him to help you.
RESONATE!
Take a few moments and acknowledge the waves in your life. Then consider their source. Can you identify what is causing them. Ask the Spirit to help you do that, then make this your simple prayer today “God, help me ride the tops of the waves.”
Conflicts and Doubts
As sure as the seasons change, we each battle the two-headed monster of conflict and doubt. Sometimes one causes the other or vice versa. Either way, they are unavoidable.
It is simply not a question of whether you will have conflict or doubt, but when. They make focusing on God difficult as they threaten to pull our minds away from Him. They seem like things we would tend to want to avoid, but they can have a very refining effect on us.
With many a conflict many a doubt
For that person must not suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways. James 1:7-8 ESV
Sometimes we are more affected by things inside of ourselves than outside. Our hearts and our minds struggle to find rest as we waver back and forth from trusting God and His word or not. That causes us to be unstable as it robs us of the stability we could know in Christ.
It is often conflict and doubt that create those waves, the result not of physical storms but mental, emotional and relational ones. What conflicts are you battling? What doubt are you facing? We all have them. The best of us simply learn Who to come to when we do.
RESONATE!
Take a few moments and reflect on the conflicts and doubts in your life. What effect are they having on you? Are they tempting you to run from God, or to Him? Pray a simple prayer like this one, “Lord, help me bring conflicts and doubts to You.”
God, thank You for the waves in my life. They encourage me to cling to You when I see them as passing through Your sovereign hands. Help me to always see them this way. In Jesus’ name. Amen!

O Lamb of God I come I come
Life can be very hard. Things come at us sometimes like the waves in a storm, one after another, relentlessly. We are tossed about like a small boat, helpless to overcome them. Still, God allows us to ride on the tops of those waves if we look to Him. Ask Him to help you.
God, help me ride the tops of the waves.
It is often conflict and doubt that create those waves, the result not of physical storms but mental, emotional and relational ones. What conflicts are you battling? What doubt are you facing? We all have them. The best of us simply learn who to come to when we do.
Lord, help me bring conflicts and doubts to You.
Sometimes the struggles are spiritual which can be very difficult to discern and even more challenging to master. Are you familiar with those fightings and fears that seem to return with regularity? Ask the Holy Spirit to help you identify them rightly and then bring them to God.
Spirit, help me discern my fightings and fears.
Whether conflict, doubt, fighting or fears, we must learn to allow them only to drive us to God and never keep us from coming. He only allows them for that purpose yet we often fail to acknowledge this, embrace them and bring them to Jesus. Ask for His help to do that today.
Jesus, help me bring the things that may have kept me from You.
Take a few moments to talk to Jesus about what has surfaced in your heart, or just listen to what He is saying to you, then we will sing once more.
Sing
Take the awareness of God’s presence cultivated in these last few minutes into the next ones and beyond. Until next time, Be Resonant.
