As we continue our journey through this wonder-filled hymn take an assessment of the level of wonder and amazement which characterizes your relationship with Jesus. We all have room to grow in response to His love for us. Let’s tune our hearts.
The Pity of Angels
That is what the demonstration of His marvelous love evoked.
These messengers of God are the same ones who protect and deliver the children of God. Yet, on this night they were prohibited from doing either for the Only Begotten Son of God. It is difficult to imagine what that must have been like for them.
How grateful we are fo the countless times these servants of the Lord have spared us unknown ills. How grateful we are as well on this night that they did not exercise their power to do the same for Jesus. If they had delivered Him, our deliverance would not have been accomplished.
In pity angels beheld Him
The angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear him, and delivers them. Psalm 34:7 ESV
This verse is a promise which tells us of the general activity of angels in the lives of those who fear God. They encamp around us and deliver us. Can you imagine how the angels must have wanted to intervene that night in the garden? They deliver, but not that night.
Jesus had the unfortunate responsibility of suffering for our sins. As they watched this unfold it filled the angels with sorrow and compassion when He pleaded with His Father in the garden. They had sung His praise from the dawn of creation, now all they could do was watch.
RESONATE!
Take a few moments and consider from the angels perspective. How they must have wanted to intervene, probably even found themselves in disbelief that the Father would allow even design Jesus to endure this kind of suffering. Make this your simple prayer “Jesus, thank You for suffering for me.”
Messengers of Light
These messengers are the same ones that have dwelt with God from the beginning. They were there when He hung the stars. They marveled as He created Adam in His image. They sang His glory upon the announcement of the birth of Jesus in Bethlehem. Now they came from on high to watch Him suffer.
And came from the world of light
…you have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to innumerable angels in festal gathering, Hebrews 12:22 ESV
This is speaking about the Kingdom to which we have been granted access through Jesus’ sacrifice. It is an eternal kingdom of light. Angels serve there as messengers of God, and extend that kingdom to us. They came to Jesus, not to deliver Him, but for another purpose, to comfort Him. More on that in our next segment.
They were present though. They had come from the world of light where they dwelt in the presence of the Father eternally. They descended into the darkest night in history, as the Son prepared to die. He sent them to do more than express pity, though it certainly started there.
RESONATE
Take a few moments and think about the procession that might have made it’s way to the Garden, unbeknownst to the disciples. Ask Him fro eyes to see their arrival. Pray for eyes of faith with a simple prayer like this one, “Father, thank You for sending Your angels.“
Jesus, thank You obeying Your Father’s will when You could have asked for more than pity. They viewed you with pity, but might have done so much more if You had but asked. Thank You for not asking. In Jesus’ name.

In pity angels beheld Him
And came from the world of light
To comfort Him in the sorrows
He bore for my soul that night
Jesus had the unfortunate responsibility of suffering for our sins. As they watched this unfold it filled the angels with sorrow and compassion when He pleaded with His Father in the garden. They had sung His praise from the dawn of creation, now all they could do was watch.
Jesus, thank You for suffering for me.
They were present though. They had come from the world of light where they dwelt in the presence of the Father eternally. They descended into the darkest night in history, as the Son prepared to die. He sent them to do more than express pity, though it started there.
Father, thank You for sending Your angels.
They came to comfort Him. I wonder how they did that? Was it simply their presence? Were they shielding Him from the encroaching darkness which was anxious to consume Him? We can not know for certain how, but we can be certain they came strengthen Him.
God, thank You for your comforting angels.
Jesus needed comforting because He was preparing to take the sin of the world on His shoulders. He was in agony already and the moment had not yet arrived. When did you last thank Him for bearing your sin-enduced sorrows? Take a moment and thank Him now.
Jesus, thank You for bearing my sorrows.
Take a few moments to talk to Jesus about what has surfaced in your heart, or just listen to what He is saying to you, then we will sing once more.
How marvelous how wonderful
And my song shall ever be
How marvelous how wonderful
Is my Saviour’s love for me
