I Pour My Love

What a beautiful image of offering our love to God, pouring it out. I imagine a pitcher representing my love and choosing to pour it out for God holding nothing back. Our love is one of our greatest treasures and offering it to God demonstrates our love for Him.

When you think of pouring your love our for God what kind of things come to mind? Serving others? Spending time with Him? Praying and studying His word? Showing mercy? Singing His praises? Take a few minutes and think about the last thing you did simply to show love for God.

What came to mind? Was that a simple exercise or a painful one? If it was painful, was it because you had trouble identifying something?

Making this commitment means that you are willing to pour out your love for God. Pour it out on Him. Pour it out on others. Pout it out.

Take my love my Lord I pour

You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. Deuteronomy 6:5 ESV

It is love which motivates all of our offerings. We are to love God with heart, soul, mind and strength Jesus taught us in the Gospels quoting this verse. When we choose to love Him we do so in response to His love for us. Are you offering your love to God today?

RESONATE!
Take a few moments and offer your love to God. Ask yourself this simple question, “Have I offered my love to God?” and then allow the Holy Spirit to reveal the truth to you. Make this your simple prayer today “Lord, I pour my love out for You.” Then prepare to take advantage of the opportunities He provides to do just that.

At Your Feet

If the imagery of the pitcher above representing our love poured out was not specific enough, lacking for you a more concrete nature consider this historical, scriptural one…

Jesus is sitting at the house of a Pharisee, having been invited as a guest. A woman of low repute comes in and washes Jesus’ feet with her tears and anoints them with expensive perfume. The religious leaders are inclined to chastise her but Jesus takes the moment to teach a powerful truth, “He who has been forgiven much loves much.”

Sometimes offering our love to Jesus can seem strange. Why do we need to do that? He knows we love Him. We already told Him. But sometimes our showing love to Jesus is not about us or Jesus as much as it is about the people watching the demonstration. Surely, this example was about Jesus’ and the love this woman had for Him, but it spoke to those present and still speaks to us today challenging us to love in proportion to the forgiveness we have received.

Heart check!

At Thy feet its treasure store

And behold, a woman of the city, who was a sinner, when she learned that he was reclining at table in the Pharisee’s house, brought an alabaster flask of ointment, and standing behind him at his feet, weeping, she began to wet his feet with her tears and wiped them with the hair of her head and kissed his feet and anointed them with the ointment. Luke 7:37-38 ESV

The story of the woman with the alabaster box is clearly referenced here. She offered something many considered valuable, but Jesus highlighted the true gift, her love. Will you draw conviction and inspiration from her demonstration of love today? How can you demonstrate your extravagant love for Jesus? What can you offer that would show your love?

RESONATE!
Take a few moments and consider how you can show your love to God today. Pray a simple prayer like this one, “Jesus, show me what to offer.” Then trust the Spirit to help you follow through with that commitment.

Jesus teach how to love You by helping always remember how much I have been forgiven. May my response to Your forgiveness continue to change my life by changing the way I love. In Jesus’ name. Amen!

When we offer ourselves we are also making an ongoing commitment. There are no take-backs with this one. God knows it, but do we? Many of us live like we can offer ourselves when it is convenient, but God wants us all the time. How committed are you to your offering?

Spirit, show me how offered I am.

All of me, only to God, for all time. Wow! That is a powerful statement. When we have offered ourselves to Him it is much easier to live out this commitment daily. Offer all of yourself again today, forever, to God alone. Then rest in that.

God, I offer all of myself to You alone forever.

Take a few moments to talk to Jesus about what has surfaced in your heart, or just listen to what He is saying to you, then we will sing once more.

Level Ground

Climbing is exhilarating. But it is also very difficult.

So is surrendering your will to God. 

Have you ever tried it? Then you know what I mean. Just like climbing requires some specific skills to be successful, so does surrender. You must learn those skills, either by trial and error, or much more easily by having someone show you.

God wants to teach you His will. When you are seeking the same the ground levels out tremendously. Are you ready to echo this prayer and see the mountain before you shrink before your eyes?

Climbing can also be very dangerous, especially if you do not know what you are doing. All the more reason when it comes to your spiritual life to remove some of the hazards that could be harmful to your health by seeking a level path to walk on as opposed to a steep one. Learning God’s will levels the ground before you.

Take my will and make it Thine

Teach me to do your will, for you are my God! Let your good Spirit lead me on level ground! Psalm 143:10 ESV

Here is a very challenging transaction. The Psalmist asks simply to be taught His God’s will, but the hymn writer asks for an exchange. I suppose you could argue they have the same result but I like the surrender of the latter. Both lead to level ground though, so yield today.

Some of our other offerings, hands, feet, lips, silver and gold are either external or can be approximated with the right actions. Offering our will expresses our desire for not only our actions but our motivations to be right. It gets to the very core of the issue. Ask the Holy Spirit to help you offer your will to God.

RESONATE!
Take a few moments and offer your will to God. Ask yourself this simple question, “Have I offered my will to God?” and then allow the Holy Spirit to reveal the truth to you. Make this your simple prayer today “Spirit, help me offer my will to God.” Then prepare to walk the level ground it creates.

God’s Will

But walking that level ground can be challenging as well, especially if the direction marked out is not the one you would choose. See, you could be taught the way to go but still choose to go your own way. The struggle between those two can be mighty unless you determine your response before the fork.

For instance, maybe you want to walk a path through wide open fields where your soul has space to expand. When God shows you His way it leads you through the city with walls that feel like they are closing in on you. If you have determined to follow God before the city comes into view it will be much easier.

Fortunately for us, Jesus had already determined to follow God’s path before He came to the Garden of Gethsemane. It was still a difficult path but He was prepared to walk it because He had decided ahead of time. When we place our will in God’s hands like Jesus did there we took can follow on even difficult paths.

It shall be no longer mine

Saying, “Father, if you are willing, remove this cup from me. Nevertheless, not my will, but yours, be done.” Luke 22:42 ESV

Jesus prays and voices a slightly different approach than simply learning God’s will. Where His will was not the Father’s He surrendered. There is no exchanging of wills, simply surrender. However you choose to approach this today, being taught, or an exchange, determine to surrender your will to God’s.

Complete and total surrender. My will no longer my own, but completely God’s. If you have ever offered your will to God you know it is not a one-and-done transaction, but must be repeated regularly. Our flesh likes to exercise ownership even after surrender. Offer your will again today.

RESONATE!
Take a few moments and surrender your will to God. Pray a simple prayer like this one, “Father, I offer my will again today.” Then trust the Spirit to help you follow through with that commitment.

God teach me your will. Spirit help me to walk in it once I learn it. Jesus, thank You for giving me an example to follow when it comes to surrendering my will to the Father. In Jesus’ name. Amen!

Some of our other offerings are either external or can be approximated with the right actions. Offering our will expresses our desire for not only our actions but our motivations to be right. It gets to the very core of the issue. Ask the Holy Spirit to help you offer your will to God.

Spirit, help me offer my will to God.

The heart is the seat of the emotions, intellect and will. We have already addressed the intellect and will in earlier sections, but not our emotions. They are so fickle, but they too are a gift from God which we can offer back to Him. Offer your emotions to God today to use for His glory.

God, use my emotions for Your glory.

God on the throne of our hearts. This is powerful imagery and helps us rightly consider the cost of offering anything and everything to God. He is King of kings and when we choose to acknowledge this in our hearts the conflict between ours and His finds resolution.

Lord, make my heart Your throne.

I Don’t Have Any Silver or Gold

Not many do actually, but fortunately the symbolism here is more about our financial resources than actual silver or gold. We might say something more like, “Take my debit and my credit cards” or “Take my checkbook and my wallet Lord”. Trying singing those. They both work. And the commitment of either will put you to work evaluating how your spending reflects a desire to serve God.

Take my silver and my gold

Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. 2 Corinthians 9:7 ESV

The offering of our bodies now turns outward, yet not entirely. Though the measure is the use of our money, the underlying factor is our heart which we will look at more closely in the next stanza. So for here, ask yourself if you are willing to put all your resources at God’s disposal.

For though our pocketbooks and wallets are external measures or expressions of our commitment to God, thinking about them still feels infinitely personal and very much an examination of our internal motivations. Once we have resolved this issue the use of our resources is much easier to discuss, but getting there can be tricky.

We should provide for our families needs. We have to eat and live somewhere. Beyond these basic necessities does your spending reflect a willingness to entrust God with your resources. You are a steward of all that God has given. Determine how willing you are to manage it for Him and HIs glory.

RESONATE!
Take a few moments and offer your silver and gold to God. Ask yourself this simple question, “Have I offered my silver and gold to God?” and then allow the Holy Spirit to reveal the truth to you. Make this your simple prayer today “God, I offer You my silver and gold.” Then open up your wallet often so He can use it for His glory.

What’s a Mite?

A very small amount. In the passage below, we read about the widow putting two small copper coins in the Temple offering. Sounds like two pennies right?

What we are committing to in this stanza is using ALL our financial resources for God’s glory. Withholding nothing. Reminds me of a song by that very title. The focus of it is surrender to King Jesus. That is the same in this stanza.

Not a mite would I withhold

Jesus looked up and saw the rich putting their gifts into the offering box, and he saw a poor widow put in two small copper coins. And he said, “Truly, I tell you, this poor widow has put in more than all of them. For they all contributed out of their abundance, but she out of her poverty put in all she had to live on.” Luke 21:1-4 ESV

The widow’s mite. What a challenge! To give all we have to live on. That is a remarkable act of faith which is impossible without God’s help. Giving not out of abundance but poverty. Lord show us how to mirror this in our lives.

RESONATE!
Take a few moments and invite the Spirit to show you how to give out of your poverty. Pray a simple prayer like this one, “Jesus, give me the widow’s faith.” Then keep your resources ever available to His use.

Lord, thank You for giving me silver and gold, and the opportunity to choose to use them for your glory. Teach me how to give out of my poverty, not only when I have an abundance. In Jesus’ name. Amen!

God, I offer You my silver and gold.

A mite is a very small amount, like a penny. The widow from Luke 21 offered hers to God and Jesus said she received eternal commendations for that offering. We must ask ourselves if we would be so willing to give out of our poverty, or only when we have abundance.

Jesus, give me the widow’s faith.

You may not consider yourself an intellectual and so assume you can take a pass on this one. You can’t. Your thought life must be consecrated to God because it shapes much of your attitude and behavior. So, no passes. Consecrate your thought life to God today.

Spirit, I consecrate my intellect today.

How will God use your mind? To shape your perspective and your actions. When you have dedicated all your mental powers to God you will think about things very differently because you will be yielded to His influence. Embrace the blessing of consecrating your mind to God.

Lord, I yield my mind to Your influence.

Let Me Sing

Do you like to sing? I do. Well, to be honest I love it.

By myself, or in groups. With music or without. In the woods or in the shower. I find myself singing at all kinds of different times for all kinds of different reasons and often give thanks to God for the gift of music and specifically the ability to sing.

What an incredible gift it is! Certainly it makes sense that we wold want to offer it back to God to use for His glory. We echo the words of the hymn making them our own prayer. We want God to take our voices but for a particular purpose: that we might use them to sing His praise.

Take my voice and let me sing

I will be glad and exult in you; I will sing praise to your name, O Most High. Psalm 9:2 ESV

We know what it is to be glad, but exult? It means to show triumphant elation or jubilation. That is a serious commitment, but God is certainly worthy of it. We should sing His praises because He deserves them. He is worthy. Have you made the decision to use your voice to sing praises to God?

Singers love to sing. They love to use their voices for God. But that should not only be true of those who have musical talent. Every believer should resonate with this expression of commitment. Is it true of you? Will you commit to use your singing voice for God’s glory?

RESONATE!
Take a few moments and offer your voice to God. No one is worthy of the praise He deserves so that is why we praise Him with our singing. Make this your simple prayer today “God, use my singing voice for Your glory.” Then open up your mouth often so He can fill it with praise.

Always Only

It is one thing to sing for God. It is another thing to sing always, only for God. Always would be challenging enough, but when the writer adds only it creates a very demanding commitment. Will you commit to sing always, only for God? What implications might that commitment have?

Does it mean you need to stay in church in one continual, never-ending worship service? No. Rather does it require you to figure out a way to sing God’s praise elsewhere. Yes. Does it possibly also mean that everything you ever sing should be pleasing to Him, even if not some version of “Hallelujah”? I believe so.

We must figure out a way to allow our worship of God, even that which involves singing, to find some expression in our lives outside of church. We must not keep our sung praise inside those walls anymore than we should keep the message of the gospel there. Singers find ways to do this, but we must all allow the Holy Spirit to so fill us with praise it oozes out as we live our lives. But what about other songs?

I believe we can sing songs that are not expressly songs of praise to God and still be singing “always only” for Him. For instance, God blesses us with other expressions of love in different relationships. When we sing songs that express that love, even though they are not be sung to God or about God they remain consistent with His nature. Are there plenty of songs that are not consistent with the nature of God? Of course. We should probably leave those for others to sing if we are committed to sing always only for our King.

Always only for my King

I will sing to the Lord as long as I live; I will sing praise to my God while I have being. Psalm 104:33 ESV

Again, the commitment to use our voice for God goes beyond the times we are gathered in church to offer our praise. The Psalmist says “as long as I live” and “while I have being”. Are you devoted to use your voice to sing to the Lord your God always and only? Maybe the latter is the toughest one.

RESONATE!
Take a few moments and invite the Spirit to show you how to sing “always only for Your King”. Then commit to doing that as  long as you live or while you have being. Pray a simple prayer like this one. “My King, help me sing always only for You.” Then keep your hands ready to follow the impulse of love.

Lord, thank You for giving me a voice to sing Your praise. Help me to never forget what an incredible blessing that is and to make a point of enjoying it every single day. In Jesus’ name. Amen!

The other part of the commitment is what we will say. We commit to fill our lips with His messages which implies there is no room for anything else. That would not only bring God glory, but keep us out of a lot of trouble. Will you commit to fill your lips with His messages?

Lord, fill my lips with Your messages.

Hands Moving

Doing. That really is the essence of this next commitment. What will I do and how will I employ my hands to do it?

Our hands are rarely still. From the moment we awake until we are asleep again, our hands are moving and doing. So what is driving them.

Often there are things to do that are simply purposeful. Getting ready for the day. Doing work. Helping those we care about.

But there are many other things to do that are our less purposeful and are simply for pleasure. Playing with our children. Throwing a ball. Climbing a tree.

Whether purposeful for pleasure there is ever the possibility of lacking true meaning, making a real difference in the world. That can lead us to the very honest conclusion that all that activity is for nothing. It may all be in vain.

But that need not be the case. Offer your hands to God and He will fill them with purpose.

Take my hands and let them move

Then I considered all that my hands had done and the toil I had expended in doing it, and behold, all was vanity and a striving after wind, and there was nothing to be gained under the sun. Ecclesiastes 2:11 ESV

There is no shortage of things into which we can engage our hands, and many will leave us feeling like wise Solomon. Wiser still is the one who determines to offer their hands to God for His purposes. Will you offer your hands to God and His purposes today?

When we offer our hands to God they become His to direct. Even still He gives us the freedom to move them on our own, but a much better choice is to patiently wait for His prompting. God does really take your hands, but you must really give them to find them useful in His service.

RESONATE!
Take a few moments and offer your hands to God. Your hands accomplish most of the doing in your life so it makes sense they are the first thing we are going to commit to God as we start our list.  Make this your simple prayer today “Father, I offer You my hands.” Then watch His fill their activity with Divine purpose.

Impulse of Love

There is no more Divine purpose than to respond to the love of God with love of our own. There are few better ways to do that than to yell our hands to the impulse of love. But what is an impulse?

An impulse is a sudden urge or strong desire to act. So, an impulse of love is a sudden urge that demonstrates love, or a strong desire to act that is prompted by love. Those impulses will be directed by the Holy Spirit and one way to begin to discern His direction is to learn His ways.

We do that by learning His commandments because they teach the ways of love. They constrain us from our own selfish pursuits and invite us to loftier ideals. They begin to develop within us the very impulses that our hands will help us act out.

At the impulse of Thy love

“If you love me, you will keep my commandments…” John 14:15 ESV

Guided by His love and our response of love. What does that look like? It may very closely resemble the hands that toil like Solomon’s but there is no vanity in the work of hands consecrated to God’s way of love. Commit your hands to move as His love directs.

When you have yielded your hands to God you can begin to sense the impulses of His Spirit directing them. He is gentle and will not force His way but will lead if you will stay open to His prodding. It is love that guides Him and that is exactly how He wants you to move. In love.

RESONATE!
Take a few moments and invite the Spirit to come teach you the ways of love as revealed in the commands of God. Then ask Jesus to help you set your hands apart to put His love on display. Pray a simple prayer like this one. “Spirit, move my hands at the impulse of Your love.” Then keep your hands ready to follow the impulse of love.

Lord, thank You for inviting me into Your love and giving me the opportunity to find purpose in using my hands to put it on display. Take my hands and let them love at the impulse of Your love. In Jesus’ name. Amen!

Welcome to Tuesday Tunings at Resonant 7, where we reflect on the reality of God and resolve to let it resound in our lives, repeatedly. Let’s tune our hearts.

Take my hands and let them move
At the impulse of Thy love
Take my feet and let them be
Swift and beautiful for Thee

Father, I offer You my hands.

Spirit, move my hands at the impulse of Your love.

Where will you go, or not go? Will you offer your feet to God so that He can move you or keep you to do His will? This seems so simple but requires a great deal of intentionality and patience. You will likely want to move before He moves you. Wait for Him. Offer and wait.

Jesus, my feet will wait for You.

Not only beautiful because they bring good news, but swift because they are anxious to do so. Why? Because people are perishing and need to hear there is a Savior. Wait for Him, but be ready to move and move quickly when He directs. Someone else may be waiting for you.

Spirit, make my feet swift and beautiful.

Take a few moments to talk to Jesus about what has surfaced in your heart, or just listen to what He is saying to you, then we will sing once more.

Sing

Take the awareness of God’s presence cultivated in these last few minutes into the next ones and beyond.  Until next time, Be Resonant.
