Be Wise, Be a Worshipper REFRAMED

Sages

Sages, leave your contemplations,
Brighter visions beam afar;

We continue our journey to Christmas and the celebration of the birth of our Savior. This week we consider the ones who rather than hearing angels sing, saw the star which announced the birth of the King of kings. Their role in the story shows us that God welcomes all who pursue Him with humility. Let’s tune our hearts.

Sages, Wise Men, Magi, They Were

Of all the things that could be said to introduce these strangers from the east, they are introduced as wise men. The hymn calls them sages, and the other common term is Magi. This term indicates that they would have been famed for their wisdom, even venerated for the the possession of wisdom, judgment and experience. If men of this caliber make the decision to make a long and perilous journey, not to mention with expensive gifts. We should take note.

Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the east came to Jerusalem, Matthew 2:1-2 ESV

The hymn, ever an invitation to come and worship, encourages the wise men of the story, and all who will follow their lead, to leave their contemplations. This is no small task, for someone esteemed for wisdom achieves such notoreity through careful examination and diligent pursuit. To encourage people to leave behind the very thing by which they have attained their status could be seen as foolish.

Just consider, or learn?

But we must consider these wise men, and learn from their example.

They add weight to the plea offered to all who will come after them. We will examine the why of their indubitably thoughtful response below, but here just acknowledge the fact that they came. And in so doing had to leave something behind. For them it was contemplations, the kind at which they obviously excelled and had set them apart. It may be something less profound for you, but no less difficult.

What might you have to leave to be marked by a similar wisdom? What thing that marks your life, maybe even something you find great value in and enjoy being associated with, must you leave in order to worship the Christ of Christmas? Can you identify it today? If not, are you willing to consider the possibility that such a thing may exist? Something that is good, but may be holding you back from the best. Take a few moments and ask the Holy Spirit to reveal if such a thing is present in your life.

Worshippers, They Became

Worship Him

So why would such men, venerated for their wisdom, leave those pursuits behind to become worshippers? What could compel them to a different endeavor? It would have to be something they deemed worthwhile, and because of there collective wisdom it should be assumed it was. But it was the culmination of their journey that demonstrated their willingness to respond to God’s invitation.

Saying, “Where is he who has been born king of the Jews? For we saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him.” Matthew 2:2 ESV

They were still wise men, but they became worshippers.

When the star rose at His birth, they saw it. They recognized Him as a king, and even determined that they would worship Him. Why? Because from a distance they had seen a brighter more compelling vision than any they had previously discovered.

Did You Notice Their Response?

It was one thing to leave behind their lofty contemplations. It was another thing altogether to embrace humble worship.

The invitation rings to all those who have ears to hear and eyes to see that brighter vision. That life of surrender to the King that transforms every rebellious heart into a worshipping one. We know nothing of their worship prior to or after this encounter, except for their willingness to heed to warning of an angelic being, but this snapshot captures their response to the newborn Christ.

So what shall you learn from their example and the transformation it produced? Do you have a clear mental picture or vision of something brighter than your current experience? Is God inviting you into something grander, bigger, better? Will you humble yourself and pursue it? If you are not sure, why not take a few moments to ask Him what that might be, and what your response should be? You will never regret choosing to worship.

Almighty God, thank You for revealing Your invitation to worship to those wise men. Thank You for prompting them to follow, and giving them the courage to do so. Thank You for their example. Help me to be willing to emulate it in my life today. In Jesus name. Amen!

Welcome to Tuesday Tunings at Resonant 7, where we reflect on the reality of God and resolve to let it resound in our lives, repeatedly. Let’s tune our hearts.

Sages, leave your contemplations,
Brighter visions beam afar;
Seek the great Desire of nations;
Ye have seen His natal star.
Come and worship, come and worship,
Worship Christ, the newborn King.

From the lowly to the learned, the call continues. The wise men were invited to leave the contemplations that had led them to the star, and we likewise are welcomed to move past what we know in search of more. Is there anything, even good things, you may need to leave behind?

They had seen the star, but the call that came to them and comes to us is that there is more. How often we become content with less than all God wants to show us. Ask God to show you more of Himself in this season that your worship may be more complete?

The magi also represent all the non-Jewish or Gentile worshippers, which is good news for most of the world. Jesus is the fulfillment of desire of all nations, not just Israel, and we are encouraged to seek Him. Commit to seek Him this Christmas season.

Though a new star appearing was remarkable, the fact that it announced a baby’s birth set these scholars on an incredible journey. Some might say it ended when they bowed their knees to the child years later, but I believe it continued all their days. May the same be true of us.

Take a few moments to talk to Jesus about what has surfaced in your heart, or just listen to what He is saying to you, then we will sing once more.

Sing

Take the awareness of God’s presence cultivated in these last few minutes into the next ones and beyond. Until next time, be Resonant.

We continue our journey through Advent as we look at the second part of this stanza. We started with the shepherds’ location and activity, and now shift to God’s arrival on the scene and the change that occurs. Let’s think about this.

God with Us

Stop for just a moment and think about those three words. Seriously. I will wait. “God with us”.

That is some amazing stuff right there.

When Jesus was laid in that manger, God was fully present there, making His dwelling among us. He demonstrated in the Incarnation that He was not far off, but was with us. The One who made the sun, which grew the hay, that made the bed, now laid asleep upon it. Mind-boggling.

“Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel” (which means, God with us). Matthew 1:23 ESV

He is with us, ergo He is with you. I think the first part of that is easier for each of us to accept. Ok, God came to dwell among us. But the second part gets a little harder. God is with me? I believe it. Spirit, help me receive it. And He will.

Think about the one who first heard these words, quoted from Isaiah 7:14. Joseph. He was in a bad spot. His betrothed had told him she was pregnant, and he had not yet been with her. No to mention she insisted God was the Father. Think about how crazy that must have sounded.

He was likely trying to figure a way out of this difficult decision. Then an angel appeared to him and said these words. And as far as we know he never wavered from his resolute decision to stay by her side; after all, months later it is clear he is still beside her in the Bethlehem stable when his stepson is born.

So what about you? Do you find yourself in an unenviable situation? How is God showing you He is “with” you? Will you remain resolute like Joseph, trusting that God is there through even confusion and pain? Take a moment and think about your circumstance, and invite God to be Immanuel to you today.

Infant Light

Yonder Shines

This is another beautiful thought. The star could be referred to as the infant light, in that it was His natal star which the wise men said announced His birth. At the same time Jesus is also the infant light Himself, Light of the World, in infant form.

This image nicely captures that duality. While the star is absolutely shining down on that manger, the manger has an internal glow emanating from baby Jesus. This makes me think of how God shined His light that night, and set a precedent for how He wants to shine His light still, in our darkness.

The people dwelling in darkness have seen a great light, and for those dwelling in the region and shadow of death, on them a light has dawned. Matthew 4:16 ESV

The people dwelling in darkness. That is us. And what is that darkness? It is darkness of soul caused by the shadow of death. Until we find the Light of Jesus, we live in the region and shadow of death. The NLT says “those who lived in the land where death casts its shadow.” That is a very powerful and clear picture. Or is it?

Shadow

If we are living in a land where death casts its’ shadow, my first question is what is the shape of that shadow. What does the shadow of death look like? The shadow of a hand is easy to picture. The image here makes that clear. It is almost as if you can imagine the shadow picking up the leaf. But it can not.

It may seem very real, but a shadow is powerless, other that to block out light from the area equal to the shape creating it. Death casts a large shadow but it is not powerful. Once we see the Light of Jesus the shadow of death can be clearly seen for what it is, a powerless two dimensional thing.

Yonder shines the infant Light. Jesus at His birth was the light that dawned. We while walking in darkness have seen a great light because Jesus revealed it to us. The shepherds were the first to see it, and they told everyone what they had seen, so the light began to spread. Will you shine that Bethlehem Light?

What shadow is death casting over you today? More than just physical death, there are relational, emotional, psychological deaths. Where do you need to see the Light of Jesus shine? Will you invite Him to come and shine into that circumstance or situation? He wants to show you His light. Ask Him today.

Jesus, thank You for residing with us. For coming and being God with us. Your presence changes every situation. Thank you for shining Your light into my darkness. Reveal where death has taken territory in my life and help me to push it back. In Jesus name. Amen.

Welcome to Thursday Thoughts at Resonant 7, where we reflect on the reality of God and resolve to let it resound in our lives, repeatedly. Let’s think about this.

Shepherds, in the field abiding,

And in the same region there were shepherds out in the field, Luke 2:8a ESV

This story is continued from the previous passage where we are told of Jesus’ birth in Bethlehem. These fields were outside Bethlehem. That is where these shepherds lived. God came to them where they lived. How kind of Him to do that! And He has been doing that ever since. Thank Him for meeting us where we live.

Watching o’er your flocks by night,

keeping watch over their flock by night. Luke 2:8b ESV

And they were just doing their job. Going about their normal activity. When suddenly God sent an unmistakable message to them. God still comes to us in our daily labors. He makes His presence known to us, but we must be ready to receive it. No doubt these shepherds were. Are you?

God with us is now residing;

“Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel” (which means, God with us). Matthew 1:23 ESV

This verse quotes the words from Isaiah 7:14, and then adds the explanation, “God with us”. The news the shepherds heard was first revealed here to Joseph. He came to dwell with us so that He could live a perfect life, then offer it to save us from our sins. Give thanks to the Father for becoming Immanuel in His son.

Yonder shines the infant light:

The people dwelling in darkness have seen a great light, and for those dwelling in the region and shadow of death, on them a light has dawned.” Matthew 4:16 ESV

Jesus at His birth was the light that dawned. We though walking in darkness have seen a great light because Jesus revealed it to us. The shepherds were the first to see it, and they told everyone what they had seen, so the light began to spread. Will you shine that Bethlehem Light?

Take a few moments to talk to Jesus about what has come to your mind, or listen to what He is saying to you, then I will read our text once more.

We continue our journey to Christmas and the celebration of the birth of our Savior. This week we consider the first ones to hear the glorious news of the angels, the shepherds. Their role in the story shows us that God meets us where we live and in what we do. Let’s tune our hearts.

Where We Live

Can you put yourself in the place of the shepherds? Spending another night out in the fields. Nothing new. Same old, same old.

I wonder what their conversations around the fire consisted of? Benjamin’s new son? What they are going to do with that one sheep that keeps trying to wonder off? How many more travelers could possibly still be making their way to Bethlehem for the census and where they were all going to find a place to sleep for the night?

Just a normal night. Living it where they did so many nights before, only this night would not be like those other nights. No, this would be like no other night.

Suddenly, an angel appeared, and they were filled with fear. So would we be, but it is not the fear I want to focus on here. It is the context of the encounter.

God chose to meet these simple shepherds where they lived.

  • They did not have to come to Him. He came to them.
  • They did not have to prepare the way. He made the way.
  • They did not have to dress up. He put on flesh.

So what about us? Are we still trying to come to God, when He is already with us? Is there anything we need to do to prepare to receive God’s message for us, or do we just need to receive it? Are we trying to get ourselves together, when He has already brought us together?

How is God trying to meet you in these days? Where is He showing up right where you live? Will you be like the shepherds and gladly receive what God has already made known to you? Take a few moments to let Him speak to your heart and respond to what He says.

In What We Do

Flocks By Night

But it was not only in meeting them where they were that God demonstrated His desire to come to them. He also did it by meeting them in the midst of what they were doing, their daily grind. That is truly remarkable.

Think about it. They were simply watching over their flocks. Nothing exciting here folks here, move along. Standing around watching sheep eat and sleep. BORING!

Maybe there are times when you are underwhelmed by how mundane your life is. Guess what. That happens to all of us. We get weary doing the daily stuff, particularly our work stuff. Punching the clock and biding our time until the end of the day. We have all had days like that.

But again it is remarkable how unremarkable their lives were, until God showed up. We may be inclined to think that the shepherds role was insignificant, but if we do, we miss the entire point. God delights in revealing extraordinary things to rather ordinary people. We see this again and again in Scripture.

Can you acknowledge that maybe God wants to do this to you? Maybe He wants to so fill what you are doing with Himself that there is no mistaking it is Him. Honestly. There is not maybe about it. He wants to do that He did it then and there for them. He will do it here and now for you.

How is God trying to meet you in these days? Where is He showing up in what you do? Will you be like the shepherds and gladly receive what God has already made known to you? Take a few moments to let Him speak to your heart and respond to what He says.

Father, thank You for what You said to those shepherds long ago. Thank you for meeting them like you did, extraordinarily in the their ordinary beings and doings. Thank You for what you are saying to me today. In Jesus name. Amen!

Mundane Tuning!

We have heard the story so many times it is difficult to imagine what that night outside of Bethlehem must have been like. How kind of God to come to simple shepherds to make the news of His coming known! How kind of God to come to us! Thank Him.

They were just doing their job, going about their normal activity when God suddenly appeared. Are you prepared to see God at work in your everyday circumstances? He will probably not come with angelic announcement, but He will come. Prepare yourself.

God came to make His dwelling among us, John 1:14, and He continues to do so. That He came to the shepherds is meant to show us He has come for us all, including the lowliest. Ask Him to dwell in you today, as surely as He did in that manger long ago.

The Light of the World came into our darkness and He keeps coming. They were welcomed into the light and so are we. As you draw near, is there darkness in you that His light is exposing? Confess it and welcome His radiant light to shine in you again today.

Take a few moments to talk to Jesus about what has surfaced in your heart, or just listen to what He is saying to you, then we will sing once more.

We continue our journey through Advent as we look at the second part of this stanza. We started with the angel host, and now consider how they were there at the creation, and also present to herald the coming of redemption in the birth of Messiah, the anointed One of God. Let’s think about this.

Start at the Very Beginning

It’s a very good place to start. And that is where the praises of the angels began. They sang creation’s story as it unfolded.

When the morning stars sang together and all the sons of God shouted for joy? Job 38:7 ESV

Creation’s Story

Angels are referred to in many different ways throughout Scripture, but one of them is “sons of God”. Here we read that they “shouted for joy” at the creation of the world.

Colossians 1:16 says that all things were created in Christ. They were there when He was making all things, and they are still there as He is remaking all things through His work of redemption. If you listen closely, you can almost hear them singing today as their echoes ring across eternity.

But what does this mean for us? The ones who were offering praise to God as He created all things, were still the first in line when it came time to offer praise for His sending His Son. We should follow their lead. They joined the stars that first morning, and continued their praise, even upping the ante by revealing their glory to the shepherds, in the moment Christ’s natal star appeared. We encourage them to continue to offer their praise, but must be willing to add ours to it.

So will you? Today, join your voice in extending the invite to come and worship to someone. How can you do that? The Christmas season provides many opportunities to invite people to join in the worship of the Christ. How can you invite someone to join you in it? Maybe an event at church or in the community? A Christmas Eve celebration? Commit to find some way to invite some more character’s into this greatest of stories.

Join the Praise

“Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased!” Luke 2:14ESV

These are the words the multitude of angels sang in grateful chorus the night of Messiah’s birth. To proclaim it best, they gave glory to God first, and then extended peace to all who choose to please God. May we always start by giving glory to God, then extending the offer of peace to all who will walk in God’s ways.

  • He was worthy at creation. So they praised Him.
  • He was worthy in Bethlehem. So they praised Him.
  • He is worthy today. So they praise Him.
  • He will be worthy eternally. So they will praise Him.
Messiah’s Birth

When you give glory to God by praising Him for sending Jesus to us, you are joining the eternal praises of God offered specifically for the Incarnation. God became flesh and dwelt among us. It is as if you are actually singing your praise with those angels over the pasture outside of Bethlehem. Incredible! But that is not all…

You also enter into those moments when you extend peace by sharing what Jesus has done for you. If you have decided to spend your life ascribing to God the worth that is due His name He is pleased with you. Even though chaos may develop in our lives at times we can still have peace despite those circumstances. When you live that out before others, they see that something is different about you. That gives you the opportunity to speak of the peace you have found in Christ, and that in turns gives Him glory.

It is a powerful cycle we are invited to step into, and welcome others into as well.

Have you ever shared with anyone the peace you have found in Christ? As you consider inviting someone to join you in giving God glory with you at some point in the season, pray about an opportunity to share with them the peace you have found. It may just make al the difference in whether they are intrigued enough to check it out for themselves.

Jesus, thank You for creating the angels to be Your messengers. I want to be your messenger as well. Create some opportunities for me to not only give You glory, but also extend peace to someone who needs it. In Jesus name. Amen.

Podcast 54.1 Transcript, 12.1 REPLAYED

Welcome to Thursday Thoughts at Resonant 7, where we reflect on the reality of God and resolve to let it resound in our lives, repeatedly. Let’s think about this.

Angels from the realms of glory,

And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying, Luke 2:13 ESV

We will get to their song later but note that these angels have come from the heavens. The realms of glory left behind, they come to tell of the King’s arrival. What kind of King gets such a royal, angelic proclamation? Only our King, Jesus Christ. Worship Him who alone is worthy.

Wing your flight o’er all the earth;

And the angel said to them, “Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. Luke 2:10 ESV

This glorious good news and the offer to receive it echoes to the whole earth, for all the people. The angels are God’s messengers and they carry this invitation to worship everywhere there wings take them. Will you put your journey to the same use declaring this invitation.

Ye who sang creation’s story

When the morning stars sang together and all the sons of God shouted for joy? Job 38:7 ESV

Though there are several Scriptural allusions to the presence of angels during the creation of the world, this one is a good one. Taken from God’s response to Job, God Himself acknowledges the presence of the sons of God, angels, shouting for joy with the morning stars. Can you hear the echo of their praises across eternity?

Now proclaim Messiah’s birth.

“Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased!” Luke 2:14 ESV

And here the host of angels sing glory to the newborn King! They join the first angel that started the proclamation of Messiah’s birth in angelic chorus. Imagine what that must have been like, and determine to respond to the call to worship with them today.

Take a few moments to talk to Jesus about what has come to your mind, or listen to what He is saying to you, then I will read our text once more.

Angels from the realms of glory,
Wing your flight o’er all the earth;
Ye who sang creation’s story
Now proclaim Messiah’s birth.

What a neat way to describe this multitude that probably scared those shepherds half to death. Having dwelt since the creation of the world in the the throne room of God, these messengers would certainly reflect His glory, not only in their desire to do his bidding, but likely even in their countenance. When your home is the very presence of God it undoubtedly affects everything about you, from your pursuits to your appearance.

They had come from the realms of glory. The Scripture says it like this.

And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying…Luke 2:13 ESV

We will examine what they said as they praised God on Thursday, but focus now on a few other words.

  1. suddenly
  2. multitude
  3. heavenly host
Angels Over Bethlehem

One angel began the proclamation, but was joined suddenly by many more. Have you ever imagined what the was like? Did they come zooming in from afar at the speed of light? Did they just appear as if from our of nowhere? How did they travel from realms of glory to the realm of earth? Whatever the answer is we know this for sure, it was sudden.

That is made even more remarkable when we consider how many of them there were. Multitude is not very specific, but would be by definition a large number. From one angel, to a multitude, and suddenly. There were a lot of them and they arrived quickly.

Finally, we learn from where this multitude suddenly appeared, and what characterized them. The host of heaven. Often in Scripture the angelic host described a warrior like group of heavenly messengers fit for battle. We can only imagine that must have characterized their appearance here as well. They came from heaven ready to do battle. Wow!

So what is our take away from this first line, the who of the first invitation to come and worship? If angels are invited to come worship, those who existed since the dawn of creation in the presence of God, and they come, then I better make sure I am ready to come as well. Are you ready to not only offer the invitation to them, but receive it yourself? Ask the Holy Spirit to help you offer it and be ready to respond.

All the earth

Wing Your Flight

From realms of glory to all the earth. Their proclamation was first to shepherds, but then to the entire world. And how fortunate that is for us.

And the angel said to them, “Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. Luke 2:10 ESV

Angels are messengers. They carry God’s messages to the people God wants to hear. This is the greatest message every spoken, and accordingly God wants everyone to hear it, so He makes that access explicit in the proclamation itself.

That first angel brought the news of great joy “for all the people”. The exhortation to the angels in the hymn is to continue to carry that message to the entire earth. As we sing it we are effectively telling the messengers to continue messaging, while simultaneously joining in the worship of the Christ.

Certainly, they are happy to do so which we will see when we look at their song a few verse later on Thursday. It is a song that also tells the good news, a story in song. They are doing their messaging work and their worshiping work at the same time. Maybe we could learn from this.

Rather than trying to create unique moments to tell the story of Messiah’s birth, maybe we should learn to make it a more natural part of everything we do. Then we will be able to simultaneously tell the story and worship Christ. Help us Lord.

Are there ways you could integrate telling the story of Jesus as you give Him praise in your daily living? Maybe if you work at highlighting His activity in your life in your normal speech patterns, and preoccupation to tell His story may just naturally emerge. Ask the Holy Spirit to show you how you can better bring together your worshipping and your messaging.

Father, thank You for sending the angels to declare the arrival of Your Son. Help us to learn a lesson from them as we blend our worship and our telling. May they flow together seamlessly so we may have more opportunities to do both. In Jesus name. Amen.

Video 54.1 Transcript, 12.1 REFRAMED

Welcome to Tuesday Tunings at Resonant 7, where we reflect on the reality of God and resolve to let it resound in our lives, repeatedly. Let’s tune our hearts.

Angels from the realms of glory,
Wing your flight o’er all the earth;
Ye who sang creation’s story
Now proclaim Messiah’s birth.
Come and worship, come and worship,
Worship Christ, the newborn King.

This Christmas carol carries the call to worship to several different groups. The first is the angelic host. Ever God’s messengers, now we get to encourage them to make known the glory in which they have dwelt since the dawn of creation. Think about that.

We are both inviting them to come and worship and to take that same invitation to the entire earth. It is marvelous to consider how with the turning of each year we commemorate their first Christmas carol with our own. Determine now to join their song.

These angels were there as God spoke “Let there be light” and they continue to dwell in His unapproachable light. They sang at the creation of all things, and were there to herald the re-creation that Christ’s coming would initiate. Praise God for new beginnings.

They were also there when the Light of the World came to dwell among us and were the first to issue the call to worship the newborn King. Thank God for making His coming known in such a glorious way, and for enabling us to echo it in our songs and lives.

Take a few moments to talk to Jesus about what has surfaced in your heart, or just listen to what He is saying to you, then we will sing once more.

Sing

Take the awareness of God’s presence cultivated in these last few minutes into the next ones and beyond. Until next time, be Resonant.
