Who I Am
My name is Timothy Scott Mattern and I served churches around the country for over twenty years as pastor of worship. This is my personal blog. It is focused on “Christian worship devotions.” I have spent the last twenty years trying to help large groups of people connect with God. I have often felt that our worship was impaired by the fact that people are overwhelmed by the daily grind of life and struggle to develop an ever-expanding awareness of God’s presence. Though I have tried to cultivate this as a lifestyle of responses to God’s self-revelations, I have longed for a way to help people grow in the spiritual discipline of worship, even while I acknowledge that I have a lot of learning to do myself. I want to bring all this passion and experience to bear on creating a tool that will aid anyone who wants to know God and learn to live in His presence.
Sliding Pages
I want to encourage you to begin reading the three pages that are scrolling across the Home page. They will quickly give you an explanation of the journey that I am compelled to take us on together, and a framework to understand my default setting, as it pertains to musical tuning as a metaphor for our spiritual resonance. From there please feel free to peruse the archives at the original Tuesday Tunings blog, and the other offerings as they are generated here.
My Biography
I have worked as a shepherd of servant musicians my entire career. I began my journey of tuning as a sophomore vocal performance major at West Virginia University, when I first heard God’s invitation into relationship. It was not long before I discerned a call to serve Christ and His Church and after graduating headed off to get some training in the field of church music at the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky. I have served churches in Kentucky, Nebraska, Florida, and West Virginia, before assuming my current role in Ohio. While in West Virginia, I was inspired by my senior pastor to begin to offer a weekly written e-pistle to folks in the church as a way of developing an understanding of what I have called a lifestyle of worship. After about 11 years of regular blogging which you can view here, I decided to take a break. When I realized how much I missed that discipline of thought and creation, I begin to think about writing again, but felt like I should expand the audience. Only God knows exactly where this will go, and I am working to develop the ideas He has birthed in me. Thanks for checking it out!
