We continue our journey through this classic hymn sung across oceans and denominations for 150 years. Our prayer is the same as all the saints who have sung it before, “Revive us again”. Let’s think about this.
Filled with Hope
Have you ever been in love? Always thinking about someone. Trying to find ways to show your affection. Preoccupied with them. This is a part of our love for God, but it is so much more.
In Revelation 2, God affirms some things about the church of Ephesus, but has one thing against them. They had forsaken their first love, and He is calling them back to it. We have each experienced the waning of the heat of that early period when love consumed us, for God, and probably for another.
Life has a way of chipping away at our passions. It can make them cold, if not at least cool. It can be difficult to maintain the heat. Sometimes it simply must be rekindled. Even then, we must welcome and receive it.
How is the heat of your love for God? Does it need rekindling? If not now, it will someday. Considering how to see it rekindled right now may help you immensely then.
May each soul be rekindled
May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope. Romans 15:13 ESV
Here we have this idea of God taking the kindling of our souls and warming us with His love and light. How kind of Him to help us in this way. Our role is fairly passive, but we must open ourselves to it.
Has anything robbed your hope, or at least cooled it off bit? Believe again that His purpose is for you to burn for His glory that joy and peace may consume you. Place your hope in His love for you and find yours rekindled.
RESONATE!
Something that was kindled but lost it’s flame must be rekindled so that flame may burn hot enough to catch the surrounding material on fire. Does your soul burn with a passion to give glory to God as it likely did at first? Ask the Spirit to rekindle your soul with a consuming love. “Spirit, rekindle my soul with all-consuming love.” Now take a few moments to allow Him to do just that.
Holy Fire
When we begin to earnestly pray like that, we must be ready for what may happen. God will answer. And fire, especially holy fire, is not easily controlled.
It is, however, absolutely worth the “risk”. Loosing control so that God can have His way with you is ALWAYS a good decision, even though it may be painful. God may just turn the heat up internally, in your soul, to prepare you for His fire: the presence, person and work of the Holy Spirit. Or He may allow the fire to fall to prepare you for external heat or pressure. Either way, His way is best.
The latter was the experience of the disciples in Acts 2. God has promised the Holy Spirit and then sent Him to empower them for what was to come, including the heat. Fire from on high came down and rested on them.
With fire from above.
And divided tongues as of fire appeared to them and rested on each one of them. Acts 2:3 ESV
The Holy Spirit did that work of kindling the souls of the disciples on the day of Pentocost, and He wants to do the same in us every day. He wants not only to rest on us, but to fill us from on high with His divine fire. Will you let Him set your soul ablaze for God’s glory today?
RESONATE!
It is not an earthly kindling we seek, but a heavenly one. The flame that will truly spark the embers of our souls is one that comes from on high. His consuming love is the fire that will ignite an unquenchable desire for His glory. Ask God to give you that love. God, send Your fire down upon me.
Spirit, come and set my soul ablaze with a passion for the glory of Christ in my life. Burn away any competing passions and consume me with one singular desire, to give glory to God. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Welcome to Thursday Thoughts at Resonant 7, where we reflect on the reality of God and resolve to let it resound in our lives, repeatedly. Let’s think about this.
Revive us again;
Will you not revive us again, that your people may rejoice in you? Psalm 85:6 ESV
We can no more revive our lifeless faith, than our lifeless bodies. We are trusting God to resurrect us beyond the grave, and we can trust Him to restore and reinvigorate our faith as well. Ask Him to revive you again today so you may rejoice anew.
Fill each heart with Thy love;
Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love. 1 John 4:8 ESV
Love is what marks us as the children of God. If we truly know God, we take a posture of love toward others, and not only those who have been good to us. This is not easy, but when we trust God to fill us with that kind of transforming love, it is certainly possible. Affirm your trust.
May each soul be rekindled
May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope. Romans 15:13 ESV
Again this idea of God taking the kindling of our souls and warming us with His love and light. Has anything robbed your hope, or at least worn it a little thin? Believe again that His purpose is for you to burn for His glory that joy and peace may consume you.
Take a few moments to talk to Jesus about what has come to your mind, or listen to what He is saying to you, then I will read our text once more, with the refrain.
Revive us again;
Fill each heart with Thy love;
May each soul be rekindled
With fire from above.
Refrain:
Hallelujah! Thine the glory.
Hallelujah! Amen.
Hallelujah! Thine the glory.
Revive us again.
Take the mindfulness of God’s presence cultivated in these last few minutes into the next ones and beyond. Until next time,Be Resonant.
